About the author

Billy Showell graduated from St Martins School of Art with a B.A. in fashion design, but was irresistibly drawn to painting and illustration. In 1993 she set course for a career as an artist and now paints, illustrates and teaches botanical painting at her studio and art clubs in the UK, USA and Australia. She lives in Tunbridge Wells, UK with her husband and two sons. Billy has been awarded five Certificates of Botanical Merit from the Society of Botanical Artists and her first book on watercolor flower portraits has been hugely successful in the UK and abroad. Billy's paintings are collected by her followers the world over and many are available as limited edition prints.

I became interested as I have a friend who was a wonderful botanical artist and very well known. She always painted in watercolour overlaid with coloured pencil. Years ago, books on the subject were very dry, and I have a book I ordered from the USA for instance on rose painting as there was not much on the subject.
Now there are a wealth of books by Billy Showell and other artists like Anna Mason.
Anna's approach is that of using small brushes to 'draw' with paint, which is very interesting but slightly laborious ( initial layers even, are laid with a small brush); glazes are generally of the same hue in varying consistency. Billy's books are more painterly and in some ways less traditional in approach, perhaps more suited to a more experienced painter, but certainly approachable for a beginner- intermediate artist.
Billy uses a largish brush with a long fine point in a size 6 generally. This is quite a surprise as that is quite a big brush!
I love the fact she uses wet in wet glazes initially.
The book has lots of detailed information on equipment and setting up and preserving your subject. She suggest you do not need to stretch your paper if you are using 300lb . I use much thinner paper so I usually do. However, Billy also usefully offers a section on post- stretching your paper and although I have done this, I think her method sounds better. As you can deduce, the book is thorough.
Rather than the usual step by step instruction, the author has opted for the approach of say; showing texture, depicting shine, how to paint agapanthus stems, how to show a pitted surface and so on.
The illustrations in the book are superb and the photos clear with the text exactly matching. It is clear that the author is a great teacher as she has taken pains to be crystal clear as possible.
Billy's book is splendid and I am just loving even one double page spread on painting peach fuzz!

I received the book very quickly so was delighted to get going with my painting whilst still in the zone of enthusiasm instead of waiting days and days for it to arrive!
Many thanks Wordery!

The imagery is stunning, vibrant colours and a wide choice of subject matter, every page is a joy..... This is a hardback book, fully illustrated in colour
