The planetary gear is nice. I wouldn't buy a stand mixer without it.
I'm not really much of a cook, so when I tried to start baking some delicious stuff, I find I get a sore arm, and I grow tired of mixing some of the firmer doughs like bagel dough, cookie dough, and even cake mix. Previously had a handheld beater which was a lot of effort and died anyway. When I got the Breville Scraper Bench Mixer, cooking got a lot easier.
Mixing is much better, faster, easier on the arm, and if you're a multitasker, you can do something else while you wait. I don't have a decibel meter, but it's not as loud as my previous hand beater. Plus this has a splash guard, so though this means you need to whip the guard when done (if used) it saves you needing to wipe up half the kitchen and your shirt compared.
The scraper does a pretty good job of scraping the sides, it's not a hermetic seal, but having the double-sided scraper makes the scraping happen more regularly than some other models.
Has a few nice recipes in the manual I tried too. If you cook a lot for many people, maybe consider getting a larger version than the LEM250SIL, but I have never needed more. I wouldn't want to get a smaller one though. For something like this, I only want to buy a mixer once, so I decided against the cheapest stand mixers, but I don't need a commercial one either. Wouldn't want to take out a loan for a mixer either or one which took up too much space. This was for me the sweet spot, right size, quality, and price.
Warning: If you run a business making bread or cakes, you don't want something this small, and need a commercial unit with a duty cycle. Not intended for mixing stiff doughs hours on end. It will overheat. Fortunately, it will shut off on its own, but the manual said the biggest stiffest doughs should only be mixed for 3 minutes at a time before it could overheat. Obviously, don't mix concrete in it. If it does overheat, needs 30 minutes to cool-down. At the same time, none of the recipes in the manual (nice recipes) are considered heavy loads. In all my breadmaking never seen this problem.
