This fit my curvy, athletic frame very well. I'm a size 8 and took a size 10 (5'7", 140). However, the material felt pretty warm on a summer day and has a crunchy plastic texture that made noise whenever I moved. Guess that's what you get in exchange for water resistance.
I really like these pants. They're very comfortable and stretchy. I normally have a hard time finding pants due to my big hips/small waist proportions, but these fit just perfect. The waistband is not high and rests just above my hips which is just where i like it. Some people have complained about the swishing sound they make ... they're not made of soft cotton but rather a synthetic material. The sound doesn't bother me. They're very flattering.
I purchased these pants for a trip to the jungles of Sulawesi with an onward trip to Bali. These pants did NOT disappoint! I was traveling in a country where the temps averaged 95 degrees with 100% humidity on pretty much every day, and these pants truly "kept their cool"! Many days I was doing up to 6 hours of trekking the the jungles and these pants really performed beyond any expectations that I could have had. They never got "soggy" from perspiration and dried quickly when they would get wet in a sudden downpour. The construction of these pants is very well thought out. And the cargo pockets are a added bonus when traveling! If you live, or travel in humid climates, then you will most likely really appreciate these pants! They have become the first pair of pants that I put in my travel suitcase when I'm heading off!
As others stated, I had to go one size up to get the same fit I usually get with Columbia pants. Also as others stated, the fabric is VERY LOUD. I have had many other pairs of technical/quick dry pants and capris, and none of them were this loud and stiff. I chose to return them because I didn't want to annoy myself walking around, so I don't know if they would change after washing.
They looked good, though, and the pockets were decent.
I have an older pair of these capris. There have been some changes.
For one thing, I like to wear my hiking clothes loose fit, so I always order a size 8 although I could wear a 6. I then, have to take in some tucks in the waist, which is fine with me. In fact, the older pair had a couple of adjustment buttons on the inside of the waistband so that you could pull in the waist band or let it out. The new pair does not have these adjustment buttons and the waist is slightly smaller. I do not need tucks, unless the waist stretches out some, which does not seem like it will, since the waist band is stiff. Anyway, otherwise, the fit is just the same. Can't figure out why they would make the waist smaller. I went hiking in them today and they were comfortable so I guess it doesn't matter unless I gain weight in my waist.
The material content is about the same in the new pair as compared to the old, but they have put a texture in the new pair. The material feels a bit stiffer, but I am washing them right now and maybe that will soften up some. I'm not sure what the purpose of the texture is.
It seems like maybe that pocket on the right front size which holds a phone may be a bit smaller....my phone pushed up against the flap and at one point, when I sat down, the phone started to come out of the pocket. Other wise the pockets are the same as the older pair.
I wish they would put the flap pocket on both sides of the front and also, I wish the regular slash pockets on the front were a bit deeper and/or had velcro closures on them. If I put anything in them, when I sit down, it falls out.
Overall, I still like them a lot, but took off a point because of the waist sizing.
These pants are well constructed. There are two back pockets, one closes with a zipper, the other with Velcro. There are two pockets just below the waistband, and one pocket on the right thigh that has a Velcro closure. It is placed perfectly, easy to access. The back pockets are extra large, not just straight down from the opening, but extending to the side seam. I just wish the pants fit me. I usually wear a size 14-16, but these were too tight in the waist and thighs. There are darts in the front of the legs, meant to be above and below the knee. The top dart fell below my knee. The capris are pictured as falling just below the knee; on me they were more than halfway down my calf. I am sad to have to return them. Too bad they don't come in a size 18, or I would exchange them for a larger size.
I've worn a size 4 in Columbia for years. However, this year, I ordered a batch of new pants, capris and shorts and NONE of them fit. According to their size chart, I should be a size 4. My old size 4s still fit. I just don't know. Even though they were too tight in the waist, these pants still managed to gape at the waist in the back. I really want to like them, but I just can't. However, if they fit your body-type, these are well-made, good quality capris. Good luck!
I like conservative coverage in my walking/hiking shorts but I don't like full-length trousers. These hit just the right balance. I'd buy them again. I went up a size based on what I read about the button at the waist and I'm glad I did. In Banana Republic trousers I comfortably wear a 14 so I went with a 16 in these and they fit just fine. Slightly baggy everywhere except the waist, which is slightly tight, but manageable and overall comfortable.
