I am very happy with this jacket. It did exactly what was expected .... water beaded up and rolled off when walking the dog in steady rain. I came home and was dry. The large was big enough to layer a thin down jacket and fleece underneath for warmth.
I initially bought this jacket here, then returned it and bought it somewhere else because I found a better price. This jacket is mostly great. It's a lightweight jacket - meant to be worn in warmer weather or layered over fleece, etc. depending on the weather. The quality is great, and I love that it can be folded up/rolled very small or stuffed into the left pocket (not sure if I'll end up stuffing it into the pocket because it seems like it would be very wrinkled once you unstuff it). I love that Columbia rain jackets come in bright colors and cost a lot less than the other higher end rain jackets.
The only thing I don't like about this jacket is the hood. I don't know if it's just me, but the hood on the Columbia rain jackets (I've tried several different styles) just don't fit me very well. There's an elastic adjuster on each side of the hood to cinch it tight around your face, but when I do that, the hood pulls too far forward over my eyes. The hood is very big and there's no way to keep it pulled back. I wish there was something in the back of the hood to adjust it smaller to keep the hood from falling over your eyes (my North Face raincoat has an adjuster on the back of the hood and it works great).
I bought this to replace my Columbia rain jacket I lost on a trip. This one was way different. It was heavy, rubbery material and fit very poorly. This is more like a Coleman jacket. Not up to my standards for light weight camping gear. Not worth the money. Its going back.
Have been searching for breathable rain jacket for some time and decided to try the Columbia Arcadia II. Pros: Sleeves long enough with Velcro wrist enclosure, enough room for a warmer layer if temperatures require and for airflow on warmer days, mesh lining, wind and water resistant, nice color (red lily) Cons: 1) Not truly breathable, although mesh layer does assist some in moisture transfer away from skin, lower sleeve is not mesh lined so fabric can stick to wrists and lower forearm; 2) No pit zips, 3) No way to stow or roll up hood if not needed, although the description claims the hood is “packable” - how?? 4) one way zipper. Even with just the addition of pit zips and a way to stow the hood, I would have rated four stars.
