Great desk set; really adds a formal charm to the desk. The material is bonded leather ( so not actual leather pieces but reconstituted leather). So while it does feel like actual leather, it lacks the original leather imperfections and character.
For the price though, this is a great desk set and can make a great gift.
The writing surface of the mat is really well done; it is smooth with no bubbles or bumps and has just the right give so one can put a sheet of paper directly on the mat and write without the page tearing or the writing passing on to the other side of the paper.
The vendor screwed up the delivery so I got a black pen-stand with the brown set, but they were quick to respond via email and replace the incorrect item.
