About the Author
Derek Landy lives near Dublin. Before writing his children's story about a sharply-dressed skeleton detective, he wrote the screenplays for a zombie movie and a murderous horror film. "I think my career-guidance teacher is spinning in her grave," he says, "or she would be if she were dead."--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The bad guys are taking shape, resting in the shadows and making plans to gang up on the good guys. And the good girls, too, of course. New weapons have been developed, and Mr Landy has certainly put his thinking cap on when he came up with the first new ’toy’ of the book. A ’Desolation Engine’ no less. ’Whats that?’ I hear you ask. Well, in answer, I need to quote page 51: '... There’s no explosion or big bang, just the instant disintegration of every single thing in its radius.’ That’s all. *grins*
The book is not really funny, not like the early chapters of the series. And you wouldn’t expect it to be funny, either, at least not until the heroes are reunited. Assuming they will be, naturally. And they are, in due course, and the tone of the book picks up considerably. In fact, the literary highlight of the entire series comes on page 132:
’...Shakespeare is a happy hunting ground of all minds that have lost their balance...’
This may not seem amusing in this review, but in the context of the book’s plot it is enough to make you laugh. Out loud, even.
Anyway, back to the plot. Sub plots abound. But first things first. The Skull Man is in trouble, and he needs rescuing. Assuming that happens, (and it does) then there is the continued threat of the return of THE FACELESS ONES, and the problems that will create, as well as the constant threat of violence and mayhem against the persons that comprise the good guys.
And so I give this book a very solid four stars. It doesn’t zing. It’s too dark for that. DARK DAYS is an aptly named memento to friendship and honour and standing up to the forces of evil and being determined not to blink first.
If the ending is as good as Lord Rumour indicates, I will let you know. Watch this space if you are keen.

When I asked him what was good about it he said that the characters of Skulduggery and Valkyrie are really well written and get on together really well - underneath all the ‘banter’.
The story itself is humorous and certainly moves along at a swift pace. You will not be bored reading this instalment in the Skulduggery series.
Overall - another great addition to this great series which could really do with a movie being made about it. Imagine that! Wow!
You should always read his dedications as they are pure genius, they have never disappointed in making me laugh like a hyena, lol. J and I have come to the conclusion the Skulduggery Pleasant is the fictional manifestation of Derek Landy himself, enabling him to say and do exactly what he chooses within his imagination.
I must warn you that the Skulduggery Pleasant books are not stand alone, you have to read the previous books in order to fully appreciate the characters and their interactions. All the characters are extremely well developed and have the most marvellous personality flaws you will ever come across.
As the central female character, Stephanie/Valkyrie, matures the storyline develops to accommodate the stages of life that would accompany aging. An example of this would include the development of the love triangle between Stephanie/Valkyrie, Caelon and Fletcher. The depth of the relationship between Stephanie/Valkyrie and Skulduggery is still unfathomable, adding an extra dimension to the storyline.
There is an HUGE plot twist within this book, so thank goodness I only have to wait until September for the next installment, I think I would go mad if I had to wait until next year :)
