Metal Tin
  • VERSATILE & VIBRANT – The 8mm square block combines versatility with vivid colour. Use the edge for fine details or the side to cover large surface areas quickly. Contains full range of 12 colours.
  • WATER SOLUBLE – Expand your creative possibilities. When blocks are used dry, they deliver pure, vibrant colour. For different effects, use a wet brush to lift colour directly from the block.
  • PERMANENT COLOUR – Pigments dry quickly and permanently when washed out, minimizing colour bleeding. Once dry, colours can be placed next to each other or layered, without fear of colour bleeding.
  • SURFACE VARIETY – Switch up your artistic canvas. As the colour dries permanently, it’s great on fabrics such as silk or cotton. Can also easily be used on paper. Modify the use to fit your project.
  • COLOUR CREATION – Integrated palette is great for creating colours. Make blends by mixing colours together or obtain lighter shades of one colour by adding water. Mix to create a unique work of art.
  • ACCESSORIES – For best results, combine with other Derwent products, such as Derwent Waterbrush Set, Derwent Inktense Block Spritzer and Derwent Inktense Block Grate and Shake.

Derwent Inktense Blocks are perfect for illustrators, designers, and students. The 8mm square block combines versatile function with vivid colour. Use the block edge for fine details or the side to cover large surface areas quickly. The unique water soluble pigment can be used for vibrant drawings, or used with a wet brush to lift colour directly from the block. As the pigments dry quickly, there’s no need to worry about colour bleeding. Perfect for colour layering. Plus, as the colour dries permanently, it’s great on fabrics, such as silk or cotton. It can also easily be used on paper. Modify the use to fit your next project. The integrated palette is perfect for creating custom colours. Make unique blends by mixing dry blocks together, or obtain lighter shades of the same colour by adding water. Mix to create a distinct work of art. With a heritage dating to 1832, Derwent’s innovation comes from an understanding of artists. We’ve produced a range of quality art materials, many of which are made in our British manufacturing plant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little set of vibrant colour inks
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 July 2018
This is a great way to take your Inktense art-ing on the road. A lovely, fairly compact set with great, vibrant colours. My only minor criticisms are that a) I wish there was an antique white pan in the set and b) that these half pans appear to be ever so slightly smaller than the average watercolour half pan. Then again, these are inks, not watercolours, and I suppose Derwent are within their right to set their own standard. Also, as I’ve seen people asking about this in various forums; these half pans can now be bought open stock from the Derwent website, so you will be able to replace the pans as they run out. However, as yet, only the twelve original colours of the set are available for purchase in this handy half pan format, so you won’t be able to add colours in this half pan format to your palette. I’m guessing this is to do with the fact that these particular 12 colours all have the highest lightfastness rating, whereas many of the colours available in pencil and block form have lower lightfastness ratings. Hopefully, Derwent will add more lightfast colours to their line of half pans in due course.

As I like my sets to be super compact I hot glued some magnets to the bottom of the pans and transferred them into an Altoids style tin, and I also took the opportunity to add antique white, thistle and turquoise to my set, by cutting up Inktense blocks and put into some empty half pans I had lying around (see picture). - I could have easily fitted these extra half pans into the original plastic paint box, next to the disassembled water brush or where the sponge goes, but I prefer the more compact format of an Altoids style tin.

The water brush that comes with this set has a really lovely fine tip, with a good flow - not too wet, not too dry - but as it is travel sized version that comes apart, the water reservoir is on the small side. I always carry a full size Pentel Aquash water brush in my pencil case, so this isn’t really an issue for me, but if you’re planning on taking your set on a plein air adventure, you will definitely need to bring either a spare water brush or a bottle of water so you can refill the brush that comes with the set.

Overall, I think this is a great little set, if a bit pricey for the amount of paints and colours you get, compared to the Inktense blocks. Still, for someone who wants to have a ready-to-go professional quality travel ink set, this is a great option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colours are so intense!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2017
These are amazing! Beautiful to use combined with a paintbrush and a touch of water. I am using them primarily for Zentangle tiles but I have seen amazing videos on YouTube of artists creating stunning pieces of 'traditional' fine art as well. Just be prepared for breakages - they are delicate - but it really doesn't matter as they work the same broken or intact. One very effective technique is to use a wet brush to take the pigment from the block, and then paint onto paper. They are extremely versatile. The picture attached is an example of a Zentangle piece done on A5 using the Inktense Blocks . I applied some random colours onto the paper first. Then tangles over them. Then used the blocks to add more depth and intensity.
