About the Author

Melissa Washburn is an artist/illustrator/graphic designer and the author of two books in Quarrys Draw Like an Artist series: 100 Flowers and Plants and 100 Realistic Animals. She grew up in upstate New York, in the foothills of the Adirondacks, but has lived in the Midwest since 1996. Her fascination with things that run, fly, and grow has led to editorial commissions for publications such as Edible Indy, Charlotte Home and Garden, and Spirituality & Health magazine. She continues to exhibit her work throughout Northwest Indiana as well as illustrate and design for advertising, editorial, textiles, and package design. Her background includes a bachelor of fine arts in painting and printmaking from Binghamton University, a masters degree in arts administration from Indiana University, coursework at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and experience as Art Director at advertising firm Group 7even. She was a 2012-2013 recipient of an Individual Artist Program grant from the Indiana Arts Commission. She lives just outside Chicago in Northwest Indiana. The author had clearly put a lot of effort into developing the drawings to allow step by step copying of a wide range of “creatures”. For me , however, the end result is disappointing : the limited perspectives - side on or “plan” particularly for many of the butterflies and insects are of limited use as a source book. For example, it would not be possible to draw a side or three quarter view of a cicada from the information given.

There's no long winded wordy explanation of color theory and how to hold a pencil it's to the point, visual, and perfect. If you wanna learn to draw this is what you're looking for. The steps are not too far apart to make it impossible. Clear and easy to understand. Best drawing book I've found so far. You should really buy this.
