Where the guide is less strong is in the practical information particularly in terms of hotel and restaurants recommendations-these are thin and not very informative and not as good as you will find either online or in a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. Nor is this a very original selection-there are large sections on the classic tourist haunts from London to York, Cambridge to Chester, Durham to Oxford. Some gems are unjustly neglected including the likes of Lincoln and Beverley plus lively cities like Leeds or Leicester so don't expect too many surprises off the beaten track. Travel especially public transport is also given only cursory attention and you will certainly need the help of Google or another browser to help with trains or buses.
At 576 pages this is also a weighty tome, and possibly for some too heavy to cart around in a rucksack, but this remains a colourful and engrossing visual invitation for some advanced preparation of travel around Great Britain.

The volume opens with a lengthy overview of the variety of attractions that are on offer throughout the country, dividing them into various categories of potential interest. Each constituent nation is then divided into smaller regions and more detailed information on each is provided. Details of places of interest to visit, along with historical and general information, complete with regional maps and city and town plans. Suggestions for walks, driving tours and even outline itineraries for several days exploration are scattered throughout the book.
DK Eyewitness Great Britain is a typical Dorling Kindersley publication, jam packed with relevant information and lavishly illustrated throughout with stunning photographs and line drawings. It is very accessible with a comprehensive index and is cross referenced throughout. It also contains website details for those requiring additional information.
Due to the plethora of information contained within, it is quite a hefty volume and not ideal for carrying around if on foot. However, it would be an invaluable resource to have in a vehicle or back at base.
Would thoroughly recommend to anybody looking for inspiration to plan, discover and experience Great Britain.

There's some historical information on Great Britain's then the Guide is broken down into London, rest of England, Wales and Scotland. Each section is further divided by regions. In general this is an 'on the beaten track' Guide covering all the main tourist hotspots.
The Guide is London centric, I'd say 20% of the content is on London. Each section does have suggested itineraries for how to spend a set number of days and the major attraction are each given two other three pages. There's an emphasis on going to specific attractions in the region or city. There's limited information on places to eat; unsurprisingly with the amount of reviews online the Guide doesn't touch on hotels and accommodation.
With such a chunky guide, some help with keeping the place like a ribbon would have been nice. As it stands, you'll be breaking the books spine and turning down a page corner.
I'd say this Guide is best for people who are living in Britain and can can plan excursions and weekends away anywhere in the country. For people visiting from abroad, I'd suggest a guide specific to where they're going will be easier to carry and use.
All in all, for the price at time of review of £13 this guide, even in the days of many internet sources, is good value and you can have some faith in the recommendations.

With the detail comes the length and size of the book, it really is quite long though it's not too big that I wouldn't consider packing it in a bag to take away with me. The book is divided into various sections, some of which will be useful prior to the trip - such as suggested itineraries while others more useful while you're on the ground - such as maps and details on key sights. The book is well laid out and has comprehensive coverage of England, Scotland and Wales including all the major sights as well as a few smaller places
Overall then if you're looking to get away within the UK this is a pretty good companion to help you plan and enjoy the holiday.
