More and more health practitioners are highlighting the health benefits of fasting. It is not a new concept but as more science is uncovered, it has become clear that this is a very beneficial strategy for better health and longevity. The problem is the actual implementation and actually understanding the implications of the approach. There are different types of intermittent fasts and also their effects are different for males and females. It is therefore important to clearly understand this to help identify the best approach.
This book is all about helping you understanding the power of fasting and most importantly, strategies that will help make fasting less painful, more pleasurable and enriching. The basic information on fasting is of course well known and you can read it in books such as Dr Jason Fung's The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting. This book also covers all types of fasts e.g. 16:8, 5:2, OMAD (One Meal a day), Eat stop eat, Crescendo fast, Alternate-day fast, Water fast, Extended fast, Protein fast, Fasting-mimicking diet, Seasonal eating, Dopamine fast. He also brings into the mix, the Bulletproof Intermittent fasting which introduces bulletproof coffee during the fast to allow extending the fast for longer periods without feeling hunger pangs or other effects.
What Dave brings to the mix is anecdotes and then add in some really useful information that may not be known to even those who regularly fast. I like how he has laid out the chapters e.g. fasting for sleep where he talks about the circadian reset fast. He has a specific chapter on what supplements to take to support fasting which I thought was very useful and a specific chapter about fasting for women and considerations for this.
I have been intermittent fasting for about 3 years now and I have definitely felt the benefits. Whilst I have mostly done 16:8 with occasional 24 hour fasts and one 36 hour fast, I feel the information in the book can help support me to try out some other variations including longer fasts. What I like is that there are very helpful suggestions on approach and also highlighting what could go wrong and sensible advice to not overdo anything. If you are serious about getting benefits of fasting then this is a great book to help you in that journey.
