Kate
5.0 out of 5 starsBeautiful quality hardback edition
Reviewed in Australia on 12 July 2021
Beautifully printed and bound. Dark red cloth hardback cover with illustrated sleeve. In my opinion, the printing and typesetting are very attractive, with the chapter titles in red ink to match the cover. The font is both attractive and optimally legible. The paper feels like it’s good quality; slightly thicker than your standard paperback and very clean and white. It feels lovely on your fingers. The illustrations are beautiful and in full colour. Includes a Bible-style bookmark string (also red). I believe it is worth spending a little bit more for a nice illustrated, hardback book over the paperback - I think it really enhances the experience of reading from a physical book (as many of us who still enjoy physical books do it for a better experience than the cheaper and more convenient ebooks). I definitely recommend this edition if you are going looking to buy the individual volumes one by one (rather than all three in a single book or a box set).

I found the narration to be a dull, lifeless monotone that rendered each character impotent. Very disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, escapist fantasy

Cracking start to this epic adventure tale which I am re-reading after ,ore than 40 years (last time I read it as one volume and never appreciated that each of the three could work on its own).

Still stands the test of time and while there is too much poetry/singing for my liking, the story hangs together well and moves along at the jaunty pace.

Great fun, escapist fantasy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A WIP....?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2014

Cited elsewhere as the book of the century, and it is a bloody marvellous thing. But Tolkien himself described it as book that grew in the telling, as did it seems all of his major works. But its lumpy. It begins as a kids story and ends up as a truly epic tale. Unfortunately once he had discovered what he'd made he had no time (or interest) to make-over the beginning of the story, hence it reads like a WIP. This of course accounts for why so much was passed over by Jackson in making his first three wonderful films (Hobbit films not to same standard). Hence no old man willow, no old forest and no tom bombidil, not even in the Director's cut versions. But that said this is a fantastic book and as early reviews predicted - the world is made up of those who have read LotR and those who will. Something to aspire to JKR

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly good, except the singing

Well read but when Serkis does the singing and stuff holy crackers my ears! MY EARS! What in the name of the Valar has just been stabbed into my aural receptors. Think drunk uncle at a wedding that everyone wishes hadn't grabbed the mic off the band.

Other than that, good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced but the maps are poor quality

Obviously the novel speaks for itself. My comment is related to this particular printed copy. The maps are printed in a very low resolution, they are pixelated, or whatever the equivalent is for this printing process. This is most problematic for the first map of the series, it’s virtually illegible. This is true for the Two Towers and Return of the King in this publishers series. That being said, the maps aren’t too important and if you are price sensitive, I’d recommend them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, a genuine classic, but suprisingly dully illustrated
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 July 2011

Don't get me wrong: I've been a fan since I was a child. It's the illustrations that are disappointing here (though, as much as we love Tolkien, we all know the narrative itself can be fairly tough going at times). The illustrated Hobbit is really good. The pictures are interesting and help maintain a child's attention. The vast majority of illustrations in The Fellowship, though, as particularly uninteresting - e.g. lots of basic countryside, much of which could be anywhere really, sometimes with small figures in the background that can be discerned as members of the fellowship.

A real shame. Given the artwork out there, this could have been so much better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Font too uncomfortable to read

The font size and spacing between lines is too small and uncomfortable to read. The cover also came a bit damaged. Not pleased by it. Decided to return.
