4.0 out of 5 starsGood device, but lacks HDMI Master Audio output. ATMOS is DD+ lossy only. Improving with updates.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 October 2021
Dolby Vision and 4k HLG UHD output is good.
Interface is somewhat overcrowded with advertising and limited app access - it could be easier to use and promotes media options for many services, not necessarily those you subscribe to - paid advertising of a sort.
No KAYO app for Australian users in the Amazon App store, however the inbuilt browser does allow you to login, save a shorcut to the site, and stream through the browser interface in HD very well.
AX wireless is ok, and is improving with every firmware update. Initially it tended not to share 5GHz band very well with capable wireless access points and AC devices sharing the same band - AC devices that usually operate flawlessly in concert with other 5GHz AX devices tend to lose connectivity - perhaps from incorrect RADAR detection from the Fire TV 4k max AX output. Does not seem to play fairly with other AX devices as well as it should, but again this is improving over time .
Plex TV is good, Netflix dolby Vision enabled and Dolby Digital + level Dolby Atmos also works in Netflix if you have a HDCP 2.0 compliant set of devices, but lack of TrueHD audio output means TrueHD Dolby Master ATMOS ot DTS-HD DTS-X tracks in plex are transcoded to non atmos AC3 audio - Atmos is removed from the stream in the process for plex, so this is a real miss and deal breaker for me. Other HD streaming services such as Disney+. Stan, Netflix, AppleTV and Prime can stream low level DD+ Dolby Atmos audio natively.
There is now a USB Hub with Gigabit Ethernet Support sold on amazon with passthrough power, so you can add this an avoid wifi issues. It also support OTG USB drives for storage expansion and media access.

If you really want Lossless Master HD audio and high fidelity high channel Atmos support then you are much better of with a modern NVIDIA Sheild that appropriately supports these audio modes with better external connectivity and gigabit ethernet for high bandwidth media consumption and high definition audio modes.
Performance is very quick and snappy., the interface is rock solid and the voice recognition is more accurate than any other system I have used - my voice is difficult to correctly recognise typically.
Remote has improved since first received with subsequent updates and is very reliable.
The lack of UHD matching Audio capability is a real miss, and I assume results simply from not paying the correct licensing fees to support them - the internal hardware of the device is definitely capable of doing so. Maybe a future software upgrade will sort this. Finger crossed.

1.0 out of 5 starsRemote stopped working. Replaced the battery then even not working.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 October 2021
I got the replacement remote . It worked for 2 days and again stopped working. I believe battery last for 2 days and then drained out. Amazon should consider IR For remote connectivity rather than wifi.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some limitations and Bluetooth not reliable
Reviewed in Australia on 15 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
The Fire Stick Max is working well with some restrictions.

It has a tendency to forget Bluetooth keyboards every week or so and they need to be reconnected manually. I find it much easier to search and control the device with a keyboard than with the included remote.

Alexa seems to search mainly in Amazons Prime Video but not in some other streaming services. That is where a keyboard would come in handy.

The remote is very cheaply made and opening the battery compartment might break it.

The audio setup is limited and the volume can only be controlled via IR on the TV or Receiver. It does not have an option to change the volume in the Fire Stick.

4.0 out of 5 stars AV1 Decoding
Reviewed in Australia on 5 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
I only bought it because it decodes AV1 videos on YouTube. 4K videos always buffered on Chromecast, this Fire TV stick plays them without missing a beat. Only two gripes I have are: 1) When the Fire TV goes into sleep mode, the TV stays on, while the Chromecast shut the TV down. 2) Automatically connects to WI-FI networks you can't delete/forget.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless junk watch the clip. Cheap squeaky plastic on remote cover ruins the whole product
Reviewed in Australia on 15 December 2021

The media could not be loaded.
I want to add to my review and show what is a total piece of cheap trash. Watch the video to show that a pile of crap there selling. If you dare to say play a 4K video then you’ll likely get this picture bonus that comes and goes it’s astonishing how out of touch Amazon is to the crap they prevail. To make matters worse in order to return the trash you have to call there customer service and go through endless pointless processes to prove there fire tv stick is in fact junk and of the poorest quality. You can’t just return it like a simple thing. One would guess it’s as they know it’s trash and want to make you give up and throw it away. And not have to replace the poorest quality crap I have seen to date.

The picture is worth more than any words I can come up with.

You can make your own decisions

I am amazed that no one else has discovered that the remote plastic doesn’t for properly and is loose so it endlessly squeaks that’s wonderful and what a bargain basement junk effort for the new fast streaming stick.

It happened on the 4K version as well but oddly the USA version doesn’t squeak and fits correctly so again the junk goes to the idiots in Australia. I can’t stand squeaky poorly made products. It’s so bad that I have even tried the 6 other remotes to see if the cover or the remote is the issue. It’s the remote

Cheap mistake that ruins a somewhat useful device. Well apart from the hiddious interface and complete lack of apps that would be useful.

There is also the Amazon tried and true color space issues that you’d think by now they would address leaving purple and green haze on HDR CONTENT on Amazon videos or perhaps that’s there atrocious post production quality.

The remote sux.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quality picture
Reviewed in Australia on 22 January 2022

Great upgrade from basic Fire Stick. Seamlessly brought over all users and apps, although new logins required. I purchased a Cat8 ethernet cable and adaptor to provide an uninterrupted option as an upgrade from basic and wifi. The setup was relatively painless with automatic recognition of both wifi and ethernet options without need of new signins. Only negative's so far are a thin white line at the bottom of the screen, irritating, but not obtrusive, will check settings. It also didn't have an option for my soundbar, so the volume control on the remote is superfluous. As I have an echo dot on the way, that should be alleviated and full options available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!

This fire stick was bought to be use in WA Australia
Many of us don't want to throw away a good old working giant TV.
We decided to go for the 4K stick and oh boy!! Let me tell you, this TV is alive and has become a smart TV 📺.
The stick fire synchronised everything automatically from our account. It was so easy, alexa voice commands work perfectly and if you have an echo in your room can be synchronised as well.
Some how the image has been updated and the pixels that we use to see are gone.
To create a full home theatre experience we connected a full set of speakers and now we are enjoying an awesome old but at the same time new TV.

The amazon stick control have been updated as well and now comes with volume up and down and direct buttons to play amazon video and music, Disney and Netflix

We are so happy, we made the right choice, this TV will give us more years of service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect…
Reviewed in Australia on 10 November 2021

Unifying all of your devices into one control is a welcome feature, however, the extensive list of devices did not include the Onkyo AV receiver we use which renders the volume control on the Fire Stick of no benefit (until we figure out how to make this work).

Otherwise we LOVE this.

HINT: Take your Firestick with you when you stay at a hotel… you may have to remove the cable they use to stream their out of date overpriced content before plugging it in.
In works fine with most STANDARD (often included) WI-FI - don’t bother ‘upgrading’ WI-FI ‘for streaming’ PFFFT.
ALL your content - rentals, services, EVERYTHING, as you would use at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Portable Media Centre

For its size, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max packs in a lot of features and performance. The fact that we can stream everything, including YouTube, Disney+ and even Apple TV+ means that this little device will forever travel with us wherever we go.

So much more compact than the alternatives, and equally as good in all respects. The remote is great and was easy to pair with TV for on/off and volume controls.

With 4K res, fast fluid UI, super simple account set up and the fact that it works on any HDMI TV, even really old models, we're so glad we picked this one up. It will get a lot of use over the years to come.

I received this within a week of purchasing, very easy to set up (like soo easy to set up, I even did it :-) ) I like the fact that I don't need to have my laptop connected to the TV any more, I now have a 10-12 year old Panasonic Viera that has a new lease on life by being very much like a smart TV with the help of the Fire TV Stick... best investment I have ever made :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars I've tried 'em all and this is the WINNER

I've been messing about with home entertainment gadgets for more than ten years. In that time, I've used Raspberry Pi, various generic Android TV boxes, the Mi Box S, Nvidia Shield TV and Fire TV Stick LIte. I've resolved every kind of issue that could be thrown up by any of those devices. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (phew!) doesn't need any troubleshooting - it just works. I have configured several Fire TV devices for friends and they have been using them without issues since day one. The remote controls my TV and soundbar, something the Mi Box S could not do. There really shouldn't be too much to say about these things; they either work or they don't. This works. Great.

I purchased this to use with an early model LG smart TVs. The tv was not so smart, and could only be loaded with LG app’s, which were hard to find. Using the Fire Stick gave access to lots of apps, voice control, and gave control of the TV. And used with Amazon Prime gave access to both Prime Video and Amazon Music, as well as competitors products. Has made the tv much more useful
