4.0 out of 5 starsGood device, but lacks HDMI Master Audio output. ATMOS is DD+ lossy only. Improving with updates.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 October 2021
Dolby Vision and 4k HLG UHD output is good.
Interface is somewhat overcrowded with advertising and limited app access - it could be easier to use and promotes media options for many services, not necessarily those you subscribe to - paid advertising of a sort.
No KAYO app for Australian users in the Amazon App store, however the inbuilt browser does allow you to login, save a shorcut to the site, and stream through the browser interface in HD very well.
AX wireless is ok, and is improving with every firmware update. Initially it tended not to share 5GHz band very well with capable wireless access points and AC devices sharing the same band - AC devices that usually operate flawlessly in concert with other 5GHz AX devices tend to lose connectivity - perhaps from incorrect RADAR detection from the Fire TV 4k max AX output. Does not seem to play fairly with other AX devices as well as it should, but again this is improving over time .
Plex TV is good, Netflix dolby Vision enabled and Dolby Digital + level Dolby Atmos also works in Netflix if you have a HDCP 2.0 compliant set of devices, but lack of TrueHD audio output means TrueHD Dolby Master ATMOS ot DTS-HD DTS-X tracks in plex are transcoded to non atmos AC3 audio - Atmos is removed from the stream in the process for plex, so this is a real miss and deal breaker for me. Other HD streaming services such as Disney+. Stan, Netflix, AppleTV and Prime can stream low level DD+ Dolby Atmos audio natively.
There is now a USB Hub with Gigabit Ethernet Support sold on amazon with passthrough power, so you can add this an avoid wifi issues. It also support OTG USB drives for storage expansion and media access.

If you really want Lossless Master HD audio and high fidelity high channel Atmos support then you are much better of with a modern NVIDIA Sheild that appropriately supports these audio modes with better external connectivity and gigabit ethernet for high bandwidth media consumption and high definition audio modes.
Performance is very quick and snappy., the interface is rock solid and the voice recognition is more accurate than any other system I have used - my voice is difficult to correctly recognise typically.
Remote has improved since first received with subsequent updates and is very reliable.
The lack of UHD matching Audio capability is a real miss, and I assume results simply from not paying the correct licensing fees to support them - the internal hardware of the device is definitely capable of doing so. Maybe a future software upgrade will sort this. Finger crossed.

1.0 out of 5 starsRemote stopped working. Replaced the battery then even not working.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 October 2021
I got the replacement remote . It worked for 2 days and again stopped working. I believe battery last for 2 days and then drained out. Amazon should consider IR For remote connectivity rather than wifi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compatible with HotSpot!
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Originally I purchased Google Chrome but after finding out I couldn’t use it with my HotSpot unless I also have my laptop plugged in to use, I immediately returned it and bought this instead.
The Start Up took a little while with all the updates and waiting and loading but once it was ready, it took like 1 minute to set up.
There are a phenomenal amount of apps to choose from, all are simple to login too.
I did have one small hiccup, and that was getting the volume control to work.
It took 6 attempts to get it working BUT IT DID END UP WORKING!
I have tried to get Alexa to work a few times and it hasn’t yet, maybe I need to try it a few more different ways but tbh it isn’t essential to use the device to begin with so I’m not really fussed on whether or not it works.
I haven’t had any trouble with loading, lagging, crashing or anything else!
Besides the minor remote issue with the volume that took a few attempts to correct, it was smooth as heck to set up and start using!
I’m going to enjoy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some limitations and Bluetooth not reliable
Reviewed in Australia on 15 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
The Fire Stick Max is working well with some restrictions.

It has a tendency to forget Bluetooth keyboards every week or so and they need to be reconnected manually. I find it much easier to search and control the device with a keyboard than with the included remote.

Alexa seems to search mainly in Amazons Prime Video but not in some other streaming services. That is where a keyboard would come in handy.

The remote is very cheaply made and opening the battery compartment might break it.

The audio setup is limited and the volume can only be controlled via IR on the TV or Receiver. It does not have an option to change the volume in the Fire Stick.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it if your TV doesn't have a Disney+ app available.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 November 2021

Bought in Oct '21. If your TV doesn't have a Disney+ app available, this is a *great* way to get around that - better than using a laptop or some other computer. The volume control doesn't work with our '21 model Hisense 4K TV, but I can live with it. I have never bothered with the gimmick that is voice recognition: navigating menus is fine enough. The remote is super small and frankly, cheap + flimsy. I like the ability to download apps, and it's nice that it has an app to view Twitch (even if interacting with chat is painful, it's fine if you just want something different on in the background). A big bummer is that it needs its own power (and the power form the TV's USB ports won't work), but you'd need to power a laptop etc anyway. Occasionally, the remote won't respond for a couple of seconds, so the device can feel unresponsive. Overall however, worth a buy - especially if you can get a discount.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome

The best device ever. It was so incredibly easy to setup. The user interface is awesome and friendly. The picture quality is also awesome, and it comes with the most comfortable and responsive remote control. It arrived the day after I ordered it. I'd give it 10 stars but I'm only allowed 5. My family and I are so impressed, I ordered another 2 units.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quality picture

Great upgrade from basic Fire Stick. Seamlessly brought over all users and apps, although new logins required. I purchased a Cat8 ethernet cable and adaptor to provide an uninterrupted option as an upgrade from basic and wifi. The setup was relatively painless with automatic recognition of both wifi and ethernet options without need of new signins. Only negative's so far are a thin white line at the bottom of the screen, irritating, but not obtrusive, will check settings. It also didn't have an option for my soundbar, so the volume control on the remote is superfluous. As I have an echo dot on the way, that should be alleviated and full options available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good way to upgrade a hdmi device into a smart TV
Reviewed in Australia on 3 April 2022
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Got some old tv laying around with HDMI that is otherwise pretty much an antique? Slap one of these into it and now you have a smart internet tv with voice recognition and a remote. Better yet it appears to include a catalog of old TV codes which means the power and volume button actually controls the tv.. which is handy as I don't have a remote for my old one!

Only downside - and it costs them 1 star here - is they run the old opera codebase for the chromecast support - which limits you to only steaming youtube from your laptop or tablet - unlike my actual chrome cast where i could stream basically anything on my desktop. It is a minor issue tho - if you got this to use as an internet tv - then you will probably never need to chromecast since you can just use the built in amazon browser to literally stream any website you like.. and for everything else they have an app for it anyway.. except for streaming your desktop :/

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Portable Media Centre

For its size, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max packs in a lot of features and performance. The fact that we can stream everything, including YouTube, Disney+ and even Apple TV+ means that this little device will forever travel with us wherever we go.

So much more compact than the alternatives, and equally as good in all respects. The remote is great and was easy to pair with TV for on/off and volume controls.

With 4K res, fast fluid UI, super simple account set up and the fact that it works on any HDMI TV, even really old models, we're so glad we picked this one up. It will get a lot of use over the years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've tried 'em all and this is the WINNER
Reviewed in Australia on 21 May 2022

I've been messing about with home entertainment gadgets for more than ten years. In that time, I've used Raspberry Pi, various generic Android TV boxes, the Mi Box S, Nvidia Shield TV and Fire TV Stick LIte. I've resolved every kind of issue that could be thrown up by any of those devices. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (phew!) doesn't need any troubleshooting - it just works. I have configured several Fire TV devices for friends and they have been using them without issues since day one. The remote controls my TV and soundbar, something the Mi Box S could not do. There really shouldn't be too much to say about these things; they either work or they don't. This works. Great.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was much surprised
Reviewed in Australia on 17 February 2022

I honestly didn't need this product as I have a Google TV but I've found it's useful to have a secondary device because the TV hasn't seemed to drop frames or be choppy with 4k content. I did miss having Google Movies and TV app in the same UI, but I found I can watch my paid-for content through the YouTube app. The mobile remote control app is handy but it could be much more functional, it just seems a bit basic and this is where Chromecast has a lot more features. Functions to control TV through CEC and firestick remote, such as turning on the device and switching inputs automatically, volume, etc is awesome, I also found using pause/play functions on my TV remote will control the firestick, which I wasn't expecting. Well worth the price and extra special that I got it while on sale. I also bought one for my Dad but it wouldn't let me sign in with my prime account (for me to watch when I visit), even though I had no issue doing the same with Netflix. The hdmi extender is a bit poor and the firestick just seems to hang, and the extender for my TV is needed as it's a bit chunky. I think I might replace it with a longer cable but I'm leaving it hang there for now, it just looks sloppy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is now my default non-Apple streamer at the $59 price

Does everything I need it to do, with no lag or issues. The remote is able to control my Sony TV without any additional configuration steps beyond the standard setup. being able to control the TV volume from the Fire TV remote is awesome. Bluetooth also seems to work well, paired an old pair of Bose ear buds and they work fine. This isn't something that can be said for the Vodafone TV, which was my previous go to.

Was able to side load one app I needed, no issues. Some folks appear to have issues with the interface, it seems fine for my needs. For the $59 price, it really is pretty hard to beat.
