Tim Barlow
5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

We just received this today
Originally we purchased because we just had a small TV in the bedroom and didn't want to upgrade as of yet
So I found this device to turn any TV into a smart TV
It was easy to install and I only ordered a few days ago and the delivery was fast too
Have all the apps on there
Remote works good
Would recommend
Will see how it goes down the track as this is our first day using it

We do not have a smart TV and didn't want to buy a new one just yet. I found this product after a google search and its brilliant! so easy to install and use and a fantastic price. I would highly recommend this product its easier than using your phone or iPad. An inexpensive way to convert a second tv set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly

I have been using this product for about 2 weeks now and am very satisfied. I purchased it so that I could rid myself of cables (e.g. for TV antennas etc.) and it really solves this issue. I now access all of the free-to-air channels in Australia through their respective apps. I have also been able to seamlessly download apps from sources other than the Amazon app store using the downloader app. They installed without a hitch and have been running perfectly. The unit was extremely easy to set up - just plugged it into the HDMI slot on the back of my TV and followed the on-screen prompts. Thus far the streaming experience has been excellent (I am using using an ASUS RT-AC3200 router with iiNet NBN 100/40) - I've only seen the unit buffering once or twice (but that was probably due to internet traffic more than anything else). Overall I am extremely happy with this purchase and would highly recommend the product, especially to anyone who has an older pre-smart TV. As long as your TV has a HDMI slot and you have decent internet I think you'll find this product useful and intuitive to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turns a dumb TV into a smart TV

We have a perfectly-sized but older TV with good picture in the bedroom. Were using chromecast for streaming but Fire Stick is much better. No need to cast from a phone with Fire Stick. Easy to instal and navigate... it's home page is better than our smart TV because it shows all streaming services (including ABC iView, 7 Plus etc) one one screen, including suggestions across platforms. Better youtube interface than our LG smart TV. We're even planning to take Fire Stick on holidays to airbnb, caravanning etc where there's no streaming but good wifi. This is the basic model - the other models have more features including volume control but this one is good enough for us.

Does what it needs to do at a good price. Clarification on 1 star for easy instal. The physical install was easy and straight forward but setting up an account for my mum and syncing the fire stick was a pain in the a#$e. Also, I bought it for my parents, 80's+, and all the options confuse them. All they need is Netflix but you cannot delete all other apps. Otherwise fine and a bargain.

3.0 out of 5 stars Avoid if using bluetooth headphones such as AirPods Pro
Reviewed in Australia on 22 November 2020

Bought this to use on an older TV in front of exercise bike with bluetooth AirPods Pro headphones. I knew from research that there were problems with volume control, but there appeared to be workarounds in the form of sideloaded apps. In the event these workarounds simply do not seem to work with the newer Fire TV Stick Lite; the unit is essentially unusable with AirPods Pro - I can hardly hear anything. It's quite frustrating given that the product is otherwise really good.
Pros: Great price, easy install, sleek interface. All Australian TV apps available.
Cons: No ability to control volume if using bluetooth headphones without their own volume control; painful to recover from sleep mode (TV turns on but apart from that nothing seems to work).

Installation was relatively easy, selected the English Australian language. However when all was done and my profile was loaded. Was unable to install any apps such as Netflix. Netflix came up in Japanese. Most writing was in English in Fire TV and my profile was right. Tried to speak to support by selecting the number and said number not correct.
No apps were downloading and kept on coming up with Errors. Very disappointing from Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars This new version of the product is far better

The product is very easy to install and setup, because I have and Amazon account already. The product has all the apps I use, except for one called DocPlay, I am in Australia so this app is only available in Australia, so I cannot fault Amazon for that. Performance over WIFI seems to be reasonable and does not buffer and stutter like some Android devices do. I was unsure about it have only WIFI, however Amazon does sell a cable adaptor that powers the device and gives an Ethernet connection. I have been using the Amazon Fire TV Stick Light for three weeks now and has not had issues. The reason I bought this device is because my more expensive Android TV device could not send surround sound 5.1 to my speaker system without costing me more money, and days of testing with expensive audio cables and audio converters. This device was cheaper to buy and does the job, I have found using the remote to be easy to get use to, and for my friend who does not find technology easy to use. The device made me laugh as I first tried the ALEXA voice control, I whispered a command and ALEXA whispered back to me. A little creepy, I find it funny. Hashtag Good times with ALEXA. The Fire Stick Light seems to be small sleek and definitely a smartypants device. Big Thumbs Up!!

I have a Samsung HD TV which requires a wireless internet adaptor. When I bought this firestick I was not confident that it would work, but it was a cheap option to obtain access to Amazon Prime, Netflix and Foxtel on Demand for a TV which still delivers excellent picture quality. I was pleasantly surprised by the ease to install and was up and running within 15 min. It has met all my requirements to date.
