5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little device with a great price

Purchased this to replace an older Apple TV and it is a perfect device. Allows all the usual suspects to be added for streaming and the picture quality is great (older tv so not having 4k is no issue). Setup quick and easy and the unit has no lag, everything works great out of the box. The remote is responsive and having Alexa built in makes navigation easier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't mirror PC screen or stream via its default Internet browser
Reviewed in Australia on 15 January 2022

I bought this device mostly so I could watch/stream an online concert on a bigger screen than my laptop, except this Fire TV Stick Lite could only manage about 15 seconds before freezing and the Internet browser (Amazon Silk?) claiming a poor internet connection. I then tried to mirror the laptop screen, but that also froze and dropped out about 5 seconds.
I also tested this with a 4G mobile hotspot and placed it right next to the Stick but nope, it still claimed a poor internet connection. I also tested this with my laptop right next to the Stick but it also did not work (screen mirroring).
Trying to find a solution to this online didn't resolve matters either, so it might just be a case of the Lite Stick not having enough RAM or something?
In the end I had to resort to connecting my laptop to my TV via an HDMI cable, which was precisely the scenario I wanted to avoid through buying and setting up this Fire Stick Lite :/

That said, I played a few HD videos from the YouTube app in quick succession and the device had no problems, so I suppose it really depends on what you're intending to use this Stick Lite for.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have high spec 4K then this Stick is OK

I am pleased with what I get from this.

When these were first released in Australia there was a lots of confusion over performance and use for AppleTV+ this put pause on my acquisition.

BUT now with Apple TV+ bedded down, the functional deprecation of ATV3, offers of a discounted price, and being forced to grudgingly surrendering my ATV4K (to a house member who lost her streaming box on changing ISP I was forced to consider something.

Sick of casting from another device CC-Ultra (still needed for new ISP free Binge), what drew me for the price (Mi-Box and Google TV $99) was a cheap "remoted box" with loadable app functionality. ALSO with a crowded house native blue tooth listening and so I bought one. So bluetooth listening is back although not as effective as the Apple TV, for the time being, I am very satisfied (though the memory may fill up) and - inexplicably - Binge missing.

The remote is good, the voice assistant OK and the absence of a volume and power control mitigated via CEC via an AVR, other smart home and Voice assistant devices.

I don't understand why silicon remote covers have to be imported and why Amazon does post "works well with" rating peripherals so it's always a case of fine print, power ratings and risk taking by Ethernet connectors and USB hubs. Surely these would be good Amazon basics (yes I know there's an ethernet adaptor)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Fire Stick Lite (2020) is a great product

I love the 2020 Fire Stick lite as it precisely meets my requirements, quality is great, build is good, Alexa is very receptive, technically an excellent product, excellent price. The biggest surprise to me was that the Fire Stick easily streams all videos using only my wifi connection without the need for hard wired Ethernet for which I was preparing and was worry about the additional costs that will be involved.

The only aspect which disappoints me is the fact that there is no volume control so need to depend on another remote for the TV or Audio system to achieve the same.

I will recommend this product to all my friends and family and any others who may want a streaming device.

Plug in, power on the TV, and then follow the instructions. First thing you need to do is pair the remote control to the TV Stick by pressing the Play/Pause button. This took me a while as I wasn't wearing glasses at the time, and the language of the instructions on the screen was changing every 10 seconds, so I didn't understand what was going on. Once the remote was paired, the setup process appeared to work well (Language setting / WiFi connect / Firmware Updates and then Software Updates after that / Account Information). Once done, all was well. You should have yourself an Amazon account to make this easier. I don't know what sort of process it would be without an Amazon account, but I found it easier with one. Alexa has a few issues with commands, but generally it works. It tried to recognize my voice, but it errored out and couldn't do it. This device went onto a NON-SMART 32" TV in the bedroom, so we stream everything (including the Australian Free To Air channels) which is great, as I don't have to install a TV antenna point in the bedroom (just a power point for the TV and Fire TV Stick power to plug into.). All in all, I am very happy with this device and its overall usage and functionality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the ultimate streaming device

We moved from chromecast as their assistant is rubbish to appletv, then appletv was rubbish so we moved to FireTV.

The Home buttton needs to be either moved or changed to 'long-press' to go to FireTV home and short press to got to the current 'app' home... the amount of times I've ended up on firetv home and then had to go back into the application #omg

Would also be great if it didn't force feed you streaming services that you dont use on the main page. WHY AM I GETTING DISNEY PLUS MOVIES AND SHOWS when I have DELETED the disney plus app!!!!! Someone's getting plenty of money or sex at Amazon for pushing Disney+ that's for sure. #sigh

Would be great if Plex had slightly better integration also, the voice search doesn't seem to work and uses amazon prime video instead, and the current episodes or movies you are watching are not shown. Not sure if that's a plex thing or once again Amazon pushing us to 'paid' and 'upgraded' content.

I'm looking at upgrading to the 4k version as it would have more 'grunt' for some video codecs when using plex - seems to get pretty hot on some, so 4k version used for 1080p (fullHD) should allow it to work nice and cool, or at least not get hot.

Another downside is that it does not directly pair to echo show speakers (which would be great for a portable projector or kids tv setup), but the speakers will pair with any bluetooth tv then you can use it for 1, 2 (stereo) or 4 (surround) echo speakers.

With Alexa an FireTV and some echo's life is good. Loving how customizable Amazon's products are compared to other brands that are trying to only please 'everyone' and ending up pleasing mostly no-one. The custom intents and skills for Alexa are great.

A great device. Very easy to set up and makes streaming from apps a breeze. I have an older LCD TV in the study and the FireStick lite was exactly what I needed to connect to our WiFi. The voice control works well. I can’t control the volume from the remote, which would be great, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the limitations of the television. Would definitely recommend for those who don’t need fancy 4K and still want to stream content.

The "firestick" installs easily and apps are easily downloaded from your Amazon account after you have activated the device.. The fire stick has bought new life to an older "non-smart" TV. by allowing streaming from local TV sites! Good value. It has a very handy voice recognition feature great for searching sites.

Works well with most apps, although sometimes a little slow starting. Once the App starts, it is pretty good with the streaming. The only downside so far is that it does not support Kayo Sports. I have to use another device for that. Hopefully, Amazon will support Kayo Sports very soon.
