Tim Barlow
5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love my Fire TV Stick Lite

Loving my Fire TV Stick Lite so much I bought a second one for family while they were still on sale. I have a digital HD TV but found it getting slower & more glitchy over time. It also had a limited range of apps.
Very happy with my Fire TV Stick Lite as:
it plays Youtube, Vimeo & most streaming apps [not HBO Max yet but can watch via the browser],
the voice control function on remote is great,
you can not just play your Audible audio books but also Alexa can read regular kindle books aloud text to speech function enabled [which it is on most books];
you can use regular internet via browser;
Use voice control & search search within apps.
One my favourite functions though is how it brings up a list of movies & TV shows that you can rent or buy. HOWEVER it will tell you if you can watch show via a streaming app Prime Video/Netflix/Disney +/Tubi providing a link show within the relevant app. IE. you're not paying for a show you can otherwise watch for free ;) This function's only available when you search for show using Fire TV Stick Lite not from within different streaming apps.
I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have high spec 4K then this Stick is OK

I am pleased with what I get from this.

When these were first released in Australia there was a lots of confusion over performance and use for AppleTV+ this put pause on my acquisition.

BUT now with Apple TV+ bedded down, the functional deprecation of ATV3, offers of a discounted price, and being forced to grudgingly surrendering my ATV4K (to a house member who lost her streaming box on changing ISP I was forced to consider something.

Sick of casting from another device CC-Ultra (still needed for new ISP free Binge), what drew me for the price (Mi-Box and Google TV $99) was a cheap "remoted box" with loadable app functionality. ALSO with a crowded house native blue tooth listening and so I bought one. So bluetooth listening is back although not as effective as the Apple TV, for the time being, I am very satisfied (though the memory may fill up) and - inexplicably - Binge missing.

The remote is good, the voice assistant OK and the absence of a volume and power control mitigated via CEC via an AVR, other smart home and Voice assistant devices.

I don't understand why silicon remote covers have to be imported and why Amazon does post "works well with" rating peripherals so it's always a case of fine print, power ratings and risk taking by Ethernet connectors and USB hubs. Surely these would be good Amazon basics (yes I know there's an ethernet adaptor)

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited use when the voice control requires u to find the remote & press a button

The fire stick lite is a good device if the it has a built in mic on the stick or remote without pressing a button. This sort of diminish the use of voice enabled devices. As i have already an alexa enabled soundbar, i had to disable the voice recognition on the soundbar in order to use this device. Again if i have to increase or decrease the volume i have to enable the alexa on the soundbar to do that. All this defeats the purpose of not having to use a remote. Ultimately i had to return it.

Plug in, power on the TV, and then follow the instructions. First thing you need to do is pair the remote control to the TV Stick by pressing the Play/Pause button. This took me a while as I wasn't wearing glasses at the time, and the language of the instructions on the screen was changing every 10 seconds, so I didn't understand what was going on. Once the remote was paired, the setup process appeared to work well (Language setting / WiFi connect / Firmware Updates and then Software Updates after that / Account Information). Once done, all was well. You should have yourself an Amazon account to make this easier. I don't know what sort of process it would be without an Amazon account, but I found it easier with one. Alexa has a few issues with commands, but generally it works. It tried to recognize my voice, but it errored out and couldn't do it. This device went onto a NON-SMART 32" TV in the bedroom, so we stream everything (including the Australian Free To Air channels) which is great, as I don't have to install a TV antenna point in the bedroom (just a power point for the TV and Fire TV Stick power to plug into.). All in all, I am very happy with this device and its overall usage and functionality.

Likes: Voice control recognizes and responds to any clear voice with no training. Easy to set up. Simple remote with few buttons and an intuitive large ring for moving around and confirming your choice (although you could just tell it what to do).
Only dislike: Opening menu is cluttered and does not show all your of apps at once

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, simple way to breathe new life into an old TV

A great device. Very easy to set up and makes streaming from apps a breeze. I have an older LCD TV in the study and the FireStick lite was exactly what I needed to connect to our WiFi. The voice control works well. I can’t control the volume from the remote, which would be great, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the limitations of the television. Would definitely recommend for those who don’t need fancy 4K and still want to stream content.

I bought this to replace all the cords we had running from our TV to the laptop and external speekers!! It was super easy to set up, plays Netflix, Prime and youtube which are the platforms we wanted to replace from the laptop. Connected easily to out bluetooth speeker. Has made our lives easier and TV set up much neater!!! we dont use the voice control so unable to comment on that feature. Only downside is it still needs to be plugged into mains power. Would be perfect if it could draw power from the TV connection to reduce the extra cord.

4.0 out of 5 stars This new version of the product is far better

The product is very easy to install and setup, because I have and Amazon account already. The product has all the apps I use, except for one called DocPlay, I am in Australia so this app is only available in Australia, so I cannot fault Amazon for that. Performance over WIFI seems to be reasonable and does not buffer and stutter like some Android devices do. I was unsure about it have only WIFI, however Amazon does sell a cable adaptor that powers the device and gives an Ethernet connection. I have been using the Amazon Fire TV Stick Light for three weeks now and has not had issues. The reason I bought this device is because my more expensive Android TV device could not send surround sound 5.1 to my speaker system without costing me more money, and days of testing with expensive audio cables and audio converters. This device was cheaper to buy and does the job, I have found using the remote to be easy to get use to, and for my friend who does not find technology easy to use. The device made me laugh as I first tried the ALEXA voice control, I whispered a command and ALEXA whispered back to me. A little creepy, I find it funny. Hashtag Good times with ALEXA. The Fire Stick Light seems to be small sleek and definitely a smartypants device. Big Thumbs Up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great device for a (dumb) TV!

Great device - was quick and easy to get going (especially so because I already had Echos in the house). Voice control using the other Echos in the house is great. The interface works well although I'm still getting used to it. I've got a 4K TV and, for some reason, Amazon still hasn't bought out the 4K Fire TV to Australia (which is sad) but the picture quality is still great. Very happy with the purchase.

It's... Ok. It's convenient for streaming on demand but if you want live tv you have to open the specific channel's app. There is a button for live tv but the only options are IMDB TV, which is only available in America, and News by Fire TV, which says it's not available. You also cannot switch between amazon accounts without erasing everything. No power button or volume control and the need to pick up the remote and press a button to use voice control also take marks off for convenience.
