‘I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger....' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1922', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.
In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.
'Fair Extension', the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. When her husband of more than 20 years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable, and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends 'A Good Marriage'.
Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long-story form.

Stephen King is my favourite author, wish he would write lots more. A little annoyed 2 of the stories were from other collections
The four stories are:
"1922" reads like a Stephen King treatment of The Tell-Tale Heart . A depression-era Nebraska farmer and his son commit murder and seem to get away with it. But the experience festers in their minds and in their lives.
"Big Driver" tells about the rape of a woman on a lonely country road and the steps she takes to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. She gets some good advice from those around her. But she makes a mistake.
"Fair Extension" is a deal-with-the-devil story. Dave Streeter gets an "extension" on his life that makes his cancer go away. He doesn't have to sign away his soul. Not exactly. But he no longer envies the happy life of his best friend, Tom Goodhugh.
"A Good Marriage" introduces Darcy Anderson, who has a happy life and a part-time rare coin business with her husband Bob. One day she discovers that he is a brutal serial killer. It isn't at all clear what the next steps are.
The collection is highly recommended, especially as an audio book. I don't often sit in my car, becoming later and later for work, while I listen to the end of a story. This book did it to me twice.
King makes a deal with the devil in "Fair Extension". A discontented mid-level executive in pursuit of happiness offers up his life-long friend for disastrous failure - a swap of circumstance that explores loyalty and jealousy. The pace picks up again with "A Good Marriage". What if you discovered your spouse was not who they appeared? The story of Bob and Darcy Anderson describes the secrets hidden in relationships and when, once revealed, causes each person to react.
These were dark and gritty stories that have tied me over for awhile. I remain hopeful that King has another epic novel in him like Salem's Lot, The Stand, and The Shining. While I have appreciated his recent turns with Cell and The Dome, we need him to knock another out of the park.

Fall Dark, No Stars is a non-supernatural collection of four novellas that focus on close relationships - husbands and wives, parents and children, childhood besties, and even neighbours. I wanted to read this book after watching the Netflix adaptation of 1922. It's an amazing recreation of the story and I'd recommend watching it if you're a fan of the novella, or Stephen King in general!
All four stories have a visceral and grimy edge to them, especially 1922 which should be avoided if you are scared of rats! These tales are emotionally wrenching...there are some stomach-churning moments, but most of the horror comes from intimate emotions.
Interestingly, two of the stories focus on men and two on women. But this book also explores the relationships between men and women in general - three out of the four stories are about violence against women by men, but the women aren't portrayed as the usual helpless victims. Even the dead ones!
Personally, I found Fair Extension the most disturbing because it really makes you question your own moral code. But all of these stories make you think afterwards - what would I have done?
Hopefully you wouldn't chose the "kill you wife" option.

I am reviewing FULL STARS, NO DARK, which is a compendium of stories.
The first one, 1922, is very good, and can be read as a non supernatural tale.
The second BIG DRIVER is very gripping, but falls down at the end (again, not supernatural).
The rest are just the usual supernatural bilge, so I don't know why I am giving it 3 stars really.
Purchaser beware, read the reviews and you will see they are mostly about other Stephen King books.

To be precise, i actually had my wisdom tooth trying to come through (or so i assume, the dentist man wasnt very helpful). And i woke up at around 3 in the morning, and found it impossible to sleep.
I knew i had awoken from a nightmare because you get that horrible feeling where you think someone is under your bed, or in the closet. And i did think i heard a bang come from the closet - But it was my mum and dad in the next room. However i can honestly say it scared the hell out of me. And no matter how hard i tryed to sleep, i kept seeing rats lined up on my beds head board, waiting to eat me. Or Arlette's half eaten corpse in the closet.
...Yes im crazy.
All of the stories are unputdownable, and they are all quite believable. Therefore, King has done his job well. You feel like your living the life of the character. Alot of points in the story actually nearly made me physhically jump, Then smile and re-read it again, thinking how stupid i am and how clever King is for making this reaction.
All the stories are very dark, but they pull you in until the end. I myself love short stories by King aswell.
So if you dislike short stories, or are turned off by a gloomy atmosphere, this book is not for you.
If you like stories that stay with you, stories that pull you in and dont let go. This is for you ;)

At £[] it was a bargain and I read it in 3 days. It's a collection of 4 short stories and each one kept me gripped. I don't want to spoil the stories for anybody so will give only a brief review of each story.
The first story is about a man who has murdered his wife and is writing his confession of the crime many years later. (This was my favourite book and I found it very upsetting in places).
The second story is about a lady called Tess who is attacked while driving home late one night. (I did figure out the ending but still enjoyed it).
The third is about a man dying of terminal cancer who is given the chance of a miracle cure but is the price he must pay too high? (A lot shorter than the other stories but still very good)
The final story is about a woman called Darcey who after having been happily married for 27 years discovers a horrifying secret about her husband (another great story with a great twist at the end that I didn't see coming).
I loved this book and cannot wait to see what Stephen publishes next.
