5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons learned during installation

It's great stuff. My apartment has one large window (about 4' square) flanked by two side windows 22" wide. The morning sun comes pouring in and soon the apartment is like an oven. As soon as we installed the film, the heat dropped noticeably — the film must reflect all the infrared as well as the UV.

A few lessons: This is not the film with the paper backing. The backing is a transparent sheet of thin plastic. To separate them, we used two short pieces of Scotch tape, and with those could pull apart a corner, and then it's easy. Continue to pull apart so the the entire end is separated, and then you can pull to separate the two altogether. Don't try to pull the separation diagonally — that doesn't work well.

The instructions are rolled up with the film, but in the CENTER of the roll, so that you might find them only after the job is done. Dig them out before you begin. There are also various short YouTube videos that are helpful.

This is the adhesive film, but it can be peeled off for removal. I imagine it sticks better than the static cling film.

The application solution has two settings: turn the nozzle one way and you get a squirt; turn the other, and you get a spray. Use the spray.

We did the small windows first, to gain practice before tackling the big window. On one small window, we failed badly, with the film getting permanent creases and wrinkles. Fortunately, we had enough so that we could remove and discard that, cut another piece, and re-do it.

Do not cut the film too large: if it overlaps too much, it's difficult to trim. I think 1" wider than the window glass is plenty, which gives 1/2" excess on either side: small enough that it's easy to trim and does not get in the way.

It's a two-person job. Watch the videos, read the instructions, and go for it. To protect surfaces from get wet as we sprayed the film, i put the film on a shower curtain. That worked quite well, and I recommend that. There's a lot of spraying and wetness.

I'm very happy with it. My apartment now is cool, despite the sun. Photo shows film installed on small window (on the left) but not let on the big window (to the right). Notice the difference in transmitted light as shown by the light on the windowsill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not perfect
Reviewed in the United States on 18 June 2018
We recently purchased this product to shelter us from the blistering heat of the summer and found, to our amazement, that it worked relatively well with some caveats. The platinum adhesive film blocks about 99% UV rays and reject 71% of solar energy. We tested this product in an apartment complex with vaulted ceilings on the highest floor. Overall, we did notice a small, but noticeable decrease in heat throughout the apartment (approximately 5-8 degrees cooler). The Application of the product was much easier to be applied on regular vertical or horizon windows than applying it on larger surfaces like a sliding door.

Applying the adhesive for the first time was particularly difficult, but it got easier after several applications. We did noticed some bubbling throughout the film, but they weren't as noticeable from afar as they were up close. The instructions that were provided with the product were great, but the online tutorials on Youtube did a much better job of providing exactly what was needed to be done and we recommend looking at those directions. The film's dark color was somewhat noticeable from the outside, but it was not a full blackout style where you couldn't see anything from the outside in.

Our Recommendation: One Gila film 48 x 15 would be enough for one sliding door or 4 regular vertical windows (This is an estimated and dependent on the size of your window). We highly recommend measuring your windows before buying how many films you might need and buy the Gila kit [[ASIN:B002YXPITY Gila Window Film Complete Installation Kit]] to make applications easier as the film does not come with the kit.

Our rating scale
Design: 4/5
Utility: 4/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Noticeable flaws: We found that there were some bubbling issues when applying the film and it was much more difficult when applying the film on larger surfaces like a sliding glass door. One crinkle of the film made marks on the surface that was noticeable from the inside compared to the outside.

Our answers to the frequently asked questions:

I live in an apartment. Will I be able to remove this when I move out? How hard is it to remove?

We tested this product in an apartment space and it is extremely easy to remove. Fill a plastic spray bottle with eight ounces, or one cup, of water. Add four ounces of ammonia and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Spray and use the squeegee in the Gila kit or thin blade to scrape off the tint. Wipe away any excess adhesive with windex afterwards.

What is the difference between platinum and non-platinum?

We had the same question when we purchased the item as well! What we found was the level of UV protection and tint color. The platinum would have a higher UV protection and tint level that provides an extra level of heat protection.

Does this reflect too much sunlight back onto other objects? Lawn, neighbors house etc.

For the most part, we did not find and reflection from the Gila film from the outside.

Overall, a great product that is a must have in areas with a high heat during the summer or in an apartment complex. It can be difficult to apply for the first time and we don't recommend applying this product on sliding glass doors unless you have someone to help you. Other than that, we highly recommend picking up this product and giving it a try as it will help you cool your home and save a little bit of electricity from utilizing the AC throughout the day.
