I love this coat. I have wanted a London Fog classic trench now for some time, and the price offered was very good. The coat was packed well, and needs a good steam as others have pointed out. It fits well - it is generous sizing but perfect for me as I can layer a blazer or sweater underneath.
When I opened the package there was a chemical smell that was overpowering. It is still airing outside (second day now) and the smell has dissipated but still not gone. It may be some kind of treatment on the fabric. I will have to see if the smell goes away, otherwise, it will have to go back. I’m so disappointed.
So this jacket is incredible quality as you’d expect with the brand but it really is a true long and loose trench coat. I got a large and it was definitely huge looking, I think a medium would have been a perfect size with the perfect trench look but the large had me looking like Scully and Mulder in those huge trench coats from the 90s. The jacket length is quite long and I’m pretty tall, it hit my calves, the fit at waist was as expected with the size and waist tie, same with the fit at chest though that was also on large end because the shoulders are definitely built for broad shoulders or to have the huge Shoulder padded blazers on under it. So if you’re going for a large trench coat to fit a 90s padded power suit under it err on the larger sizing, but if not go down a size or just don’t size up. Outside of the sizing issue I really really did want to love this trench it’s very classic style, good quality, and waterproof but I’m just not going for a skeptical FBI agent in 90s power suits and a massive trench look right now.
A few reviewers had said this coat runs small, and I agree. This surprises me because often clothes toward the higher end, made by established manufacturers, run a little large for their stated size. On the borderline of large to extra large as per the size hart. I ordered large, hoping it would be okay for me. I found I need the extra large, which sadly is not available. It's a beautiful trench coat (fine fabric, good looking buttons, attention to detail, etc.). I regret that I had to return mine, even though I did think it was maybe a little overpriced for a trench coat that doesn't include a zip-out lining for warmth.
This trench, while lovely and of good quality, is not for me. I thought it would be more tailored, but it is not. The fit, for me, is boxy and on the large size. I needed to order a size down. Also, I do not like the flap of fabric on the back. What is its purpose?
