5.0 out of 5 stars A fluid translation of a major Mahapurana
Reviewed in India on 18 October 2020
The Markandeya Purana is not only famous for the Devi Mahatmyam (Chandi or Durga Saptashati) which is covered from chapter 78 to 90 but also for simplifying several events of the Mahabharata and other events giving answers in a conversational form to important questions. Although there are many instances where you can find very regressive medieval thoughts, the book does inspire to follow one's dharma Mostly in the dialogue format, the Markandeya Purana consists of 134 Chapters (nunbers differs in different versions) and said to contain 9000 shlokas (actually it is around 6500) making it the smallest Mahapurana.

Talking about the translation, Bibek sir, just like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, Geeta and Bhagvatam, has not failed to uphold the fluidity of the translation. The footnotes are very helpful. It has a continuity and feels as if you are reading Amish. There are no diacritical marks (ā,ē,ō,ī,ū) and hence one makes mistakes while pronunciation.

*This is not a shloka to shloka translation and contains only English translation*
