I bought the book for the nostalgic photos in it and I am impressed with the research that the author has done so looks like a fascinating read as well. The book is small (hence the name "Stocking Stuffer edition" but it is 192 pages and printed on good quality paper. Have already emailed the information to a friend who I know will love it as well. Great idea for yourself and for a gift.

4 estrelas: o livro poderia apresentar mais coisas. Ele é resumido demais. As partes sobre bolas de Natal (as excêntricas bolas dos anos 50 não foram muito destacadas) e cartões são superficiais. Deveria ter uma seção só com imagens do Papai Noel. Faltou mostrar mais imagens de capas de revistas, de catálogos de lojas e de LP’s. Selos postais seriam bem-vindos. Tudo isso ajudaria. A parte sobre papéis de presente é de fato interessante (ainda que sucinta) já que praticamente não encontramos publicações sobre o assunto. Sim, ele também ajuda na decoração de Natal!

I looked forward to giving this book to a friend as a fun reminder of our (midcentury) childhood, but it was just too full of vaguely dark references to a midcentury obsession with technology and the Cold War. The book has lots of excellent photos and is well-researched, but it seemed a bit lecture-ish. And in the Afterward, when the author claimed that today, "in the era of Buy Nothing Christmas", the enlightened folk are thinking about carbon footprints and "focusing on experiences rather than things", I laughed out loud.
