5.0 out of 5 starsI loved this book so much so I purchased the audio as well....
Reviewed in Australia on 18 February 2021
I'm new to Norse mythology and loved the characters the way the stories unfold. The crisp writing style got me! I read it twice, just for pure enjoyment. I suggest you'd purchase the audiobook as well. It gives a more in-depth telling of how Neil wanted the stories to be read.

I prefer non-fiction writings, but this Neil Gaiman piece is crafted beautifully.

1.0 out of 5 starsBook arrived in disgusting condition
Reviewed in Australia on 17 January 2022
Book arrived as if it were used.
It has greasy smudge marks all over the over, the corner of the back is peeling and there are fingerprints everywhere.
Something you’d expect from a second hand store, not brand new off Amazon.

I’d like either a full refund or discount because this is most certainly not the brand new book I paid for.

It would be far better with separate chapters for each god, and a better background rather than such emphasis on myths.

I thought the book was not bad. I was thinking it would be the Norse myths with a modern telling. Unfortunately, but with credit to him, Gaiman stuck to the rigid, sparse style of the original tales. Made for interesting, but not overly engaging reading. As a Gaiman fan, this one was just alright for me.

Book came wrinkled and wavy for some reason? It's a real eye sore and I pride myself in having books in good condition so it annoys me to see it come to me like this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nonsensical and tedious

I’ve loved Neil’s work before, this book is a long way from engrossing and seems like a Sunday-afternoon re-hash for the publishers. A real shame.

A quick storytelling of a fabled history of Asgard. Gives a good overview providing entertainment and some enlightenment of Odin and his family.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unreadably sparse writing

It's written as the myths are clearly written. Which means it's almost unreadable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2018

I really like Neil Gaiman's work but this was such a disappointment. I loved myths and legends as a child, especially the Norse ones, and hadn't read a collection of Norse stories for many years. So I was really looking forward to one of my favourite set of myths being retold by one of my favourite authors. Gaiman mentions that many of the Norse myths have been lost over time - we know of certain characters but we don't know what they did in their stories as they were not preserved. ,Unfortunately Gaiman seems to think this is a licence for telling these stories in a clipped and disjointed way. There's no emotion in the tales, and they lack cohesion, seemingly lurching from one scene to the next in abrupt transitions. A real pity

3.0 out of 5 stars I always loved reading about these myths when I was a kid
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2018

This is a new retelling of Scandinavian Mythology. It follows the familiar pattern from origin myths to Ragnarok. Most of the stories follow Odin, Thor and Loki as there is the most material on them according to the author. I always loved reading about these myths when I was a kid, more so than the Greek or Roman ones, so I had high hopes for this, particularly as it's written by Neil Gaiman. And it was perfectly fine. Nothing especially wrong with it but nothing that stood out either. I was expecting more, what that more is I don't know but I wanted it nevertheless. It's also a very short read. The book is circa 260 pages but with normal formatting it could have been 100.
