Anyway, back to these tights, specifically. First off, I decided to buy this model without the chamois for the versatility. I already have a large collection of Pearl Izumi bibs (with chamois), so it seemed silly to spend more and buy the ones with the built-in chamois. Instead, I can pair these with any of the different varieties of bibs I own: shorts, 3/4s, or even my thermal 3/4s - all depending on the weather. That versatility will make these things worth every penny.
By the end of my ride this afternoon the temp was down into the mid 40s (completely overcast), and wearing these tights with just my regular bib shorts underneath I was perfectly comfortable. As the temps drop further, I'll switch to wearing my 3/4s underneath, and then once it gets even colder I can toss my thermal 3/4s under and and be extra toasty.
Frankly, I'll give up on outdoor riding well before these tights do. Other pieces in my collection are sure to be the limiting factor - it'll be my toes, ears, and nose that'll make me move inside well before these tights give in.
REGARDING SIZING: I was worried about what size would fit me based on some other reviews so I tried both a medium and a large. I wear medium in my regular PI bibs, and thats what I ended up keeping in these tights as well. I don't think that these are necessarily cut any different than PI's regular bibs, its just that this material is less stretchy so it gives the appearance of them being cut more trim. I'm able to get them over my bibs without much hassle (ok, maybe a little hassle), but they fit well once I get them on. The large was just too big - too loose in the knee and calves.
If I had to complain about one thing with these tights it'd be that the material is a bit slippery. I find myself sliding forward on my saddle wearing these a bit whereas I don't when wearing my regular PI bibs. Maybe they could fashion the "saddle strip" down under with a different fabric, or some grippy dots or something I don't know. It's definitely not a dealbreaker for me but your mileage may vary.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. A "Must Buy" for anyone who rides outside in fall and winter!
