David Allen Sibley (born 1962, in Plattsburgh, New York) is an American naturalist. The son of ornithologist Fred Sibley, he began watching and drawing birds at a very young age, and spent most of the 1980s and 90s traveling all over the North American continent in search of birds. He is the author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds (and several other books about birds), as well as the Sibley Guide to Trees.

Excellent bird guide

The introduction has some hints about birdwatching for neophytes plus a good explanation of the pictures and diagrams. Variations in each bird are shown in the sketches, according to geographic location, age, and the season of the year. There are clear maps of North America that show areas where each bird is found in winter, summer, year-round, during migration, as well as rare reported sightings. For each bird there is a description including average length, wingspan, weight, habitat, habits, and a description of their calls. Although the book primarily focuses on birds in the US, it would be useful to birders in Canada as well.
