I read this book in one sitting, couldn’t put it down. Very well written with good solid characters. There were so many times I said out loud “no, don’t do that!” ..... couldn’t fault the writing and editing, and the storyline is excellent. I’ve been to Florence and it’s hard to imagine the destruction that happened there, but it gives you an appreciation of what these people endured for so long. I’d give this book 10 stars if I could.
"The Stolen Letter" by Clara Benson is a tale of artworks, bravery and romance as Germany occupies Italy amid the ever increasing desperation of the people as they wait for the allies to arrive and liberate them.
This is the first Clare Benson book i have read and it was totally absorbing. I could hardly wait to turn the next page. A wonderful read and now for the next one of hers.
This story drew me in from the start and I was immediately concerned about the heroine. It is hard to imagine the destruction of such a beautiful city.
Great romantic story that keeps you enthralled even though it does rely a bit on some rather contrived coincidences. Plenty of genuine history research around women pilots in England during WWII. Very enjoyable and well written.
I found it a bit tricky keeping the various characters clear in my head and their relationship with each other, particularly the Italians. However, it is a good story that could be a sparkling read if only the author had spent a little more time on it. I got the impression she wanted to get it done to a deadline because the exciting parts should have had more tension and the drama more zip. Then it would have been a great read and I'd have given it 7 stars. The beginning, in particular, is a bit marred by the lack of tension in places where it could really have kept the pages turning. When Stella overhears information about how she is being used could have been spun out to give the reader the drive to read on at all costs (to sleep or work to be done!). The writing otherwise is good and I liked the characters but some of them, including Ted, were not developed nearly enough. Ted was an intriguing character full of contraditions and I liked him because he had energy and passion. I liked Stella but, she could have seemed so much more sympathetic to us if she'd been given more space right at the start for us to care about her situation. I hope Clare Benson will take time over her next novel. This one would make a thrilling film if given a bit more attention. I shall read more of Clare Benson's books, definitely. Well done as far as it has gone!

Enjoyed this book, set in one of my favourite eras, WW11 and also favourite locations, Italy. It was interesting to read how the events affected Italy, in particular the devastation of the iconic city of Florence. I enjoyed the added interest of the art business. I liked the main character, Stella, but did find some of the other characters a little difficult to believe in. Would recommend.
A truly excellent read. A real page turner which you will not want to put down. It was different reading a war novel set in Italy and to gain an understanding of the political situation there. Thoroughly recommend this book.

If I was younger and this was my first of these type of books, then I would say it was brilliant. However, I have read many other books in the same vein so was not hugely impressed with the story. So, it was well written, factually correct in the historical aspects of the story and a good read overall.
