Combined into one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien's five acclaimed modern classic 'fairie' tales in the vein of The Hobbit, read by Derek Jacobi.
The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are joined here in one volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for listeners young and old.
- 'Roverandom' is a toy dog who, enchanted by a sand sorcerer, gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures.
- 'Farmer Giles of Ham' is fat and unheroic, but - having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant - is called upon to do battle when a dragon comes to town.
- 'The Adventures of Tom Bombadil' tells in verse of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls.
- 'Leaf by Niggle' recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle, who sets out to paint the perfect tree.
- 'Smith of Wootton Major' journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children.
Taken together, this rich collection of work from the author of The Children of Húrin will provide the listener with a fascinating journey into lands as wild and strange as Middle-earth.

As it always is with Tolkien, great stories and loved the illustrations as well! Beautiful collection of his shorts and we'll worth having in your Tolkien collection!

It’s supposedly a childrens book. But it is quite well written and should appeal to adults who are interested in Tolkien’s body of works.

This review is for the product, NOT J.R.R. Tolkien's wonderful tales.

This book contains The Smith of Wooton Major, which I consider to be one of J.R.R. Tolkien's most wonderful works, after The Silmarilion. I was excited about ordering a deluxe edition of this wonderful work, that I might keep for many years and perhaps even pass down to my daughter. Alas, this "deluxe" book is garbage. I have ordered two now, one being a replacement of the first. Both have the same defects. The Tolkien emblem in the spine is not centered, so it looks like a school project rather than a luxury book. The join between the spine and the front cover is wonky. Like, REALLY wonky. The spine has blemishes on, deep scratches. Shame on HarperCollins for trying to sell this junk. It's an insult to J.R.R. Tolkien's wonderful legacy.

Not necessary but very much necessary

This book is a great addition for any Tolkien super fan. It has fine short stories about some of the characters in middle earth that are not mentioned in The Hobbit and LOTR. (Except from Tom Bombadil) and it’s complied into a neat one book collection with illustrations by Alan Lee himself. Although the book isn’t as high quality as the other Harper Collins illustrated editions (glued binding not sewn). It’s still a lovely book to add to the collection.

A wonderful piece of collection, arrived as perfect as it was described! It's light sage-coloured leather jacket makes of it a delicate book to display and the reflecting golden seal including all the symbols of the main stories contained lends it an utter touch of class.
I'm really happy to have invested in such a fine product!

Simply beautiful...

This is a simply beautiful book, a wonderful collection of faery stories complemented by Alan Lee's sublime illustrations. In this collection of 'Tales from the Perilous Realm' you are treated to no less than five stories from the wonderful imagination of JRR Tolkien: Roverandom, Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Smith of Wootton Major. All have something to say - whether it is about life in general, human nature, society or just plain wonderment...
I can heartily recommend to fans of Tolkien, of magic and of 'faery', of Alan Lee or to those wishing to explore Tolkien but who are not yet ready to tackle the mammoth mountain of literature that is The Lord Of The Rings! This collection is fun, at times frivilous and can be read fast. Perfect for relaxation when you don't want to be too taxed!
Try it...you may find you'll fall for it!

I love Tolkien’s books, and am slowly adding to my collection. The book is not too heavy to hold, and the font is easy to read. The drawings are amazing, and bring the stories to life.
