There's a difference in English vs American love stories - they're slightly more tortured and tormented; more angst; less hot and heavy; and they take the long drawn out route to get to their HEA. This book didn't give an indication of the local setting, so you don't know until you start reading. And it was a slow start. Minnie's story for me was an interesting journey with a quirky backstory. Her attitude at times was a bit draining and her not wanting Quinn's advice or his help in her 11th hour of need was frustrating as hell and lost me as a supporter, especially as it affected Leila and others as well. Thankfully at around the 89% mark, she (and her mother) finally turn their lives around, which was refreshing, albeit, a long time in the making, so the last 10% was enjoyable but ended too soon. I was waiting the whole book for Minnie and Quinn to finally connect the dots and see that their lives had crisscrossed several times, but sadly, only one of these were mentioned quickly on the last page. Leila her BFF, was delightful. With crazy hair and a crazy wardrobe, she has the loud and proud personality to pull it off. She is a positive influence on dowdy-ho hum Minnie and keeps her from wallowing from the safety of her home alone, especially at New Years.
