About Umbra

Umbra is a global housewares product design company which is bringing thought and creativity to everyday items through original design.

It is a Toronto-based homeware design company born over 30 years ago when graphic designer, Paul Rowan, couldn’t find a nice window shade to hang in his apartment window. So, he made one and people liked it. He soon teamed up with childhood friend, Les Mandelbaum, and Umbra (in Latin, 'shade') was born. Les and Paul began reimagining everyday items into modern ware.

Hanging from the shower as shown in the picture this looks good. However if you need to put it over the glass of the shower enclosure it looks cheap (which in all fairness it is!), clunky and ugly and when I tried this, there was much head-shaking from my husband. It was a very tight fit to force it over the arm of the shower and the suckers on the back don’t stick to my wavy tiles, but now it’s in position it’s unobtrusive and doing its job well. I have an aversion to metal bathroom fitments which invariably rust and this certainly solves that problem at a reasonable price!

Shower caddy is a little wider than I would have liked. It's very well made and could hold all you want it to. My only problem is that only one of the suction cups actually held while the other kept sliding down the shower wall/ glass. The other problem is that the hooks don't fit over the shower riser or head so I'm going to have to be a little inventive if I'm to be able to use it.

I've been searching for a shower caddy for months as mine was rusting badly and was leaving rust marks on my shampoo bottles, shower screen etc. Finally found this one and it's been terrific! It's not made of steel so is impossible to rust. Fits my bottles fine and even has a hole to put the squeegee in. Very pleased with this. Won't be getting any steel variety shower caddies ever again.

I like this item as a piece of affordable, modern design that adapts to different situations.

But! I'm recovering from an injury and it really does resemble the adaptations I've had fitted in my bathroom - it's the same grey you see on the zimmer frames and crutches etc loaned by the NHS. This is not the kind of coordination I'm looking for.

That aside, it could look great in a minimal bathroom, but be aware that those hooks do not stretch, and that the straps may need to twist depending on how and where you hang it; on the shower screen, fine. If you plan to put it on the shower head but you like to have everything straightened out and symmetrical, this product is not for you!

It is a great size and takes 5 large containers of shampoo. I previously tried a storage caddy that was chrome but was concerned that the hooks may chip the glass screen - I cannot hang as displayed as the hooks are not big enough to go over my shower fixing. The plastic hooks are strong and I am not concerned that they will damage the screen. I am very happy with the size and design.
