Emma was my intro to watercolour in real life and what I appreciate from the book is that Emma's voice shines through, she drops in little nuggets of funny among the educational information and it all comes across as guided fun instead of overwhelming. The included projects have step by step instructions as well as a brief introduction paragraph which will remind you of the techniques the project will have you try, along with the colours needed (all made from three primary colours along with a convenience white and black).
The presentation of this book is lovely, physically the publishers have done an excellent job, the book is sturdy without being unweildy, it's the perfect weight and size, lays flat on opening, the cover is shiny and luxe, with a keep shut elastic band of purple (they used the same presentation in Emma's first book "Brush lettering from A to Z"), Emma's photo's are colourful and vibrant, the accompanying artwork and Emma's calligraphy make it very enjoyable on the eyes.
Would recommend you check it out and all of Emma's work.

BEST watercolor book ever! It’s a must-have!!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 October 2021Verified Purchase
Wow! I feel truly blessed and happy that I discovered Emma’s watercolor book for beginners. I have honestly bought every watercolor book out there and Emma’s book covers each topic with SOO much detail, insight and information — it’s PURE GOLD. Other watercolor books that I have purchased cover very surface level information when it comes to materials, color theory and techniques. Emma’s book is seriously filled with literally everything you need to know about watercolors + more!
I love how Emma covers so much info in the materials section, color theory, so many amazing techniques (OMG) and projects!! One of my favorite things about Emma’s book is that the color theory is easy to understand and it actually makes sense in comparison to other books that I have read. It’s not overwhelming and very approachable, which is perfect for someone like me!! I really loved learning about mixing colors and learning about the color wheel. I even mixed my very first colors together to create violet and black with just 3 colors — I was seriously amazed!!
I feel like Emma is there holding my hand, which gives me the boost of confidence and I’m constantly reminding myself.. “Yess yess! I can paint a beautiful piece! I can do this!” I was super nervous even getting started, but with Emma’s amazing step-by-step illustrations and techniques, I was able to paint this beautiful lavender floral that I did not even know that I could paint (see attached photo in this review for reference- last photo)! I truly believe that everyone needs to have Emma’s book added to their bookshelf — it’s that good and truly exceeded my expectations!!
I also love all the attention to detail throughout the book! There are so many cute illustrations and colorful watercolor washes — I love it so much!! I am so excited to learn more about watercolors with Emma’s amazing guidance + book and will be making it a goal to paint something new every week because there are so many projects to choose from like leaves, plants, flowers, moons, galaxies, sunset landscapes and so much more! Thank you Emma for creating the best watercolor book out there! :)
Now it’s your turn!! You NEED to buy this book NOWWW! :)

This is definitely an amazing resource for beginners! I've been learning watercolor painting from Emma before this came out, and I still couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy it. This book has everything you need to get started. It covers the basics from what supplies you should get and why to color theory and how to paint with a limited palette of colors. It goes through so many techniques so you can learn how to paint whatever you want. The included project tutorials are the perfect way to test your skills and see how far you've come! Highly recommend!

Fantastic book for beginning watercolor artists

I received this gorgeous book today and it includes everything I wish I had known when I began my watercolor journey. It's chock full of information on choosing supplies, color theory, techniques and projects. All explained very clearly and with a bit of Emma's cheeky humor. I began as a student with Emma when she first began teaching and she's crammed so much of the information that she spent years teaching us into this book. Can't recommend it enough!!!
