1.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.

I'm not crazy about this book. Given the cost I was expecting more but it's very basic. The artwork is simplistic and the language used seems to be quite juvenile. Being a beginner does not necessarily equate to needing childlike instruction or wanting to make ugly art in vivid colours. I would not recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well designed book, but not quite what I was looking for

This book is very nicely designed and has beautiful colors that capture the eye. I think this book would be great for beginners if they like the artist's painting style. While I did like a few of the projects, I just wasn't all that interested in most of them. I wish Amazon would show a few more pages of the books they sell so you could get as better idea of the projects before you decide to make a purchase. When you are looking into a book like this, they only show you a few pages, mostly from the front of the book, which leaves out most of the projects. The reason you purchase a book like this is for the projects as much as for the instruction. I ended up deciding to return it as it wasn't my style.

Been waiting for the new Kristy Rice book since April. It arrived today and is chock full of great watercolor tips, examples, how to information. Have purchased several of her other books and really feel I’m acquiring skills every day. Invest a little, have gained a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

After having a long dry spell in doing any watercolor painting I needed some inspiration. I saw this book and thought I’d give it a try. I have several books (I’m embarrassed to reveal just how many.I have) but this book is great! Colorful, inspiring and spiral bound. Making a painting based on a textile print? What a great idea that in turn has given me more ideas! It’s a great book and it’s written in a way that’s full of fun. Lots of great tips too.

Just started Watercolor painting, saw Kristy Rice on Tik Tok. I’m just beginning and this book literally starts at the beginning and paints it’s way through every aspect of watercolor. But the best thing is truly that Kristy just wants to create art for joy’s sake! Beautiful pictures, great step by step instructions on how to learn the rules then break them! So encouraging, so insightful, so joyful!

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art by an accomplished artist

This book is puzzling. The author is clearly an accomplished artist, but perhaps less a writer or teacher. In the introductory pages much is made of a "no rules" approach and yet, the book is full of "use this brush, here are the colors I use, expensive paper is a must, you really need to practice a lot..." type of instruction.

Also, from the title, I expected at least some discussion of joy. Aside from repeating some joyful phrases, like "juicy color" and "diving in," this was MIA.

I found little here to differentiate this book from numerous other watercolor instruction books. The same discussion of materials, the same types of exercises, the same stress of the need to practice. If you already have a book like that, you can safely save your money here. My cynical side wonders if many of these books are written to improve the author's income and allow them to add "published book" to their resume.

Kristie's signature joy is an open invitation
To forget fear and timidity in painting. Simple step by step exercises help me grow as an artist and express my own passion for color. Her vivid illustrations are wonderful anti depressants, the book makes me smile every time I pick it up!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of my time

This book was not what I expected. I had watched a couple of Kristy's You tubes of flowers and leaves and I bought the book based on those. Amazon revealed very little of the book. About 80% of this book is filled with a hodge podge of brush stroke designs that are worthless to me. The constant verbiage from the author cheerleading her readers like little children for encouragement was irritating. I was pulled in with the hardcover spiral design and that is really the only good thing I can say about this book. I see the author is selling paint brushes, hmm......I hope I can return this book even though I took off the wrapper.
