5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Excellent tips & skill-building projects. A favorite in my art book collection!

[***Top 3 things I love about this book***]
1. Projects include excellent tips to help you learn skills rather than just ‘copy’ what is depicted. For example, tips explain why shadows are placed in certain spots, what techniques add illusion of dimension and depth, how to build vibrancy, how to avoid muddy results.
2. Each project focuses on helping you build a new skill; observation, drawing using shapes, depicting textures for hair | warts | spikes | feathers | fur, making a bland subject more interesting, blending and softening lines, adding dimension, painting smooth gradients and bright highlights, plus more.
3. Each step is clear and easy to follow, with excellent instructions and accompanying figures.

[***What could be better***]
Just one thing - the reference photo at the start some projects is too small and/or dark so you really can’t see the details. But this isn't a big deal since the project steps don't really rely on the reference pics, so I am still giving this book 5 stars.

[***More details about the book***]
This is great book for beginner & intermediate artists who are nature lovers.
Each project begins with a short paragraph of interesting nature facts about the subject.
There are 12 Ink-and-watercolor projects: daisy, moth, mushroom, ferns, praying mantis, moose antler, frog, owl, snail, caterpillar on milkweed
There are 12 watercolor-only projects: sprig, butterfly, leaf, pine cone, salamander, warbler, rabbit, blueberries, duck, fox
The book starts with nice simple tips for suggested art supplies to do the projects in the book, shows the basic color pallette the projects are focused on, plus includes a few good tips to darken or lighten shades and easily mix a custom black to give added life to paintings. There are a few key tips for layering, contrasts wet-on-wet vs wet-on dry, how to blend unintended outlines, create highlights.
I like how the book keeps the text focused on what is needed for the projects, and doesn't include extra content that isn't essential for the projects. [There are plenty of other books out there covering details on a large variety of art supplies, color-theory, color wheels, color-mixing, all the various painting and drawing techniques, etc.]
The book concludes with additional inspiring ideas to continue your art journey enjoying nature and art.

Highly recommend - get this book! It is awesome!

I rarely write reviews but for this book I am compelled to. There is not one piece of instruction that she leaves out of her tutorials. I have purchased no less than 12 books previous to this one and have thrown them all down for one reason or another. Every other book I own doesn’t explain everything for the beginner needing to know every detail. They may even show step by step pictures like this book but in their books their will be obvious info missing from one pic to the next. When I say she tells every single detail of what you need to do and every material needed I am not exaggerating. Some projects will have 5 or 6 pages of detailed instructions with a clear picture of every step, with nothing left to guess. I’m in LOVE with this watercolor guide!!! This is the first time I have read one from cover to cover and am doing every single tutorial with excitement! I just can’t say enough!!! If you are a beginner or even further along than a beginner but there are still a few techniques or steps you are unsure of BUY THIS BOOK! If it doesn’t help then you are hopeless😂

My watercolor book by Rosalie Haizlett arrived this afternoon and I already know that I’m going to treasure this book for many years to come . It is a positive and cheery watercolor book that goes over the basics of how to draw and paint objects from nature is kind and sweet in style without being saccharine or condescending. The book begins with some of the basics of watercolor and sketching and then goes through from easiest to most complex a series of works from nature. This would be a great book for a young person who wants to learn how to watercolor or an old person like myself who wants to try something new. Even without painting it has beautiful pictures and lovely descriptions that make it a terrific read

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!

Rosalie has been one of our favorite artists for years, and it is so nice to have her new book as an addition to several of her prints that we own. She takes her "top teacher" Skillshare status to a new level with this book. If you have ever participated in one of her workshops you know how personable and encouraging she is, and working through this book is just like having her by your side every step of the way. The illustrations are not overly simplified, so you will be learning professional techniques needed to begin producing your own fine art. The delightful complexity of the illustrations make this book an excellent gift for anyone, from a young beginner, to someone who has been painting for years. The price of the book is amazing considering the hundreds of hand rendered illustrations and the value of having such a skilled artist and communicator walk you step by step through her process. This is a book for the ages. Bravo!

I preordered this book at the recommendation of a friend in WV who is an herbalist and artist. It's a gorgeous book, filled with stunning illustrations, clear guidance, and step-by-step techniques for completing each project. I'm fairly new to watercolor painting, but I love dabbling in sketching and painting flowers, leaves, and herbs, so this book is a wonderful companion for helping me to grow my skills and confidence. I've just started working through it, but I highly recommend Watercolor in Nature for anyone who is interested in becoming more connected to the natural world, growing their painting skills, or just learning how to see with a new perspective.

What a beautiful book! I'm so happy I preordered this book and it came just in time for these quiet winter months. I've never done watercolor before, so I was nervous how difficult it might be....but Watercolor in Nature is compiled in a way that builds skill so it isn't overwhelming at all! The images are stunning, the directions are well thought out and conveyed, and I'm finding my inner artist. It's a win all around! If you are looking to learn, expand your skill set, or for some beautiful imagery- this is your book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great combo of watercolor and ink

This was a nice surprise, with lots of wonderful information. I thought it was just about watercolor but I was delighted to see that half the projects included ink as well. I love the illustrative look of inking and then watercoloring a piece so I was excited to learn some tips and tricks on this subject. I also appreciate that the author encourages you to use what you have instead of preaching a list of supplies that you need to make things work. I also love using handmade paints so I am glad that Rosalie suggests buying handmade paints if you can. This is great for beginners or more experienced artists who want to pick up a few tricks and follow along with some pretty examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro book to sketching and watercolor

While I do have art experience, studied in college and been at it awhile, I am out of practice. This is a great book geared for sketching, drawing, pen work and watercolor. I was not sure about certain things so I will explain how the book is broken down. The first half of projects use sketching, watercolor and permeant ink marker like Sakura micron pens or fabercastle fineliner. The second half only use sketching and watercolors. There are brief but detailed instructions for sketching, use of pen and watercolors. There is no watercolor paper in this book so you need to have that. Also, steps do not highlight specific tools needed for each project aside from watercolors by name. However, there is a getting started section in the front that covers what pen or brush is needed. You really only need 2 watercolor paint brushes size 0 and 2 and 1 fineliner pen size 05 micron. I have many sizes of microns so I also used a 08 and 05 to save time with thicker lines and so there's options there. What I like is you follow projects in order so your skills build and there are some facts about the subject being drawn which are a nice touch. There are also helpful tips about drawing in nature beyond this book. The daisy is the first project in this book, it focuses on the use of shapes in sketching. The artist encourages individuality which is important and while I followed the steps I also made my daisy more blue and added some metalic paint for highlights because why not :) I will work the entire book and I recommend it completely!
