I am not really one for reviewing anything, because I really don't dislike much. During the early 1940's with only the radio to listen to, my ears were tuned to all kinds of music, plus going to the pictures with all the soundtrack music that accompanied the films. A collector all my life, including of LP's and CD's, I have been familiar with Rimsky Korsakov music all my life, but his symphonies had eluded me, apart from his more popular works. I decided to get this recording under Neeme Jarvi conducting the Goteborgs Symfoniker. I like the SOUND of a symphony orchestra in my 12'x12' room, and not the FULL orchestra in my room. Call me a philistine if you like however, I am not a fan of Digital sound, I use an Analogue amplifier with an equalizer set to my range, and the room acoustics. The Deutsche Grammophon recording is perfect to my well tuned ears. It introduced me to these three symphonies so beautifully performed, I played the discs immediately over again. Jarvi is the best conductor around now and has put his own stamp on his performances. I recommend this 2CD set recording for what it is.. Great.
I won't beat about the bush. I don't understand the recording process or how they restore etcetera. You don't need to be a musician or understand music in any shape or form to enjoy this set. The orchestral playing is absolutely incredible and Neeme Järvi brings out the best in these works, bringing them to life. I like Scheherazade but I absolutely love everything about these works. They're full of glorious melodies and masterful orchestrations. Well worth buying
I bought this 2 CD collection as I had heard Capriccio espagnol from this set being played on Classic FM. As a relative newcomer to purchasing Classical music I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the other material that I had not heard before. I now know sufficient to know that D-G is one of the best labels for Classical and I can certainly highly recommend this set.
As above, famous for one piece of music, Rimsky-Korsakov was a more than talented `one piece' composer and the above collection is essential listening to obtaining a wider view of the composer's achievements.
Well worth listening to and a delight for all ears.
Sehr schade, keine Empfehlung.
This 2-CD set is actually the exact same 2-CD set of "Rimsky-Korsakov: 3 Symphonies; Capriccio espagnol; Russian Easter Overture" for Neeme Jarvi - but in a slim 2-CD case and - unfortunately - less attractive cover. But don't judge the "CD" by its cover, this 2-CD set is well priced while the other 2-CD set is out-of-print and you can only buy it used. I believe that Rimsky-Korsakov is one the the best composers just for "Scheherazade" but if you listen to this CD too, you will know why he is truly the best ever. Search also for "Fantasia on Serbian Themes". If you enjoyed "Scheherazade", you will enjoy Symphony No.1 & No. 2(Antar) specially conducted by Neeme Jarvi.
