To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Bought a slightly different set which came unpainted (black) which are five star. This pair is painted and is done well except for the white which looks like it's done on the fly or an after thought. Strans of cheap white web the teeth and a sloppy brush runs down the spine. It's as if they gave it to a young child to finish. Still like both sets. Would buy unpainted ones again.
These are smaller than I thought they would be. I naturally assumed from the photo and title that they were 10” high; as the height is clearly the longest dimension. It was only after they arrived that I saw in the description that they were only 7” high. I don’t know how they get that they are 10” deep - each one is only 3.5” deep. Other than that they are nice if you are comfortable with that size. I probably won’t send them back as it’s too much of a headache.
Fantastic quality! Heavy and solid. Very impressive looking and not identical! The paint jobs are great but slightly different. Love these. Company was phenomenal as well. One came with a broken nose, they sent the entire order again and had them to me in 2 days. Told me to keep the others. Very impressed!
The dragons are nicely rendered however the original packaging from China (not Amazon’s) was the absolute worst Styrofoam I have ever seen. One of the dragons arrived with the body broken off from the base. The Styrofoam disintegrates on touch, and after removing the bookends I had to vacuum my carpet, and this morning I was still picking up pieces. Because there are so many little nooks and crannies with the bookends themselves, I had to use compressed air to get additional Styrofoam pellets off and out of it. I ended up repairing the broken one with superglue, only because I thought it far simpler than trying to repack and return them, which would have been a major job by itself. There would have been no way to use the original packing material. So that’s my review, the product is as advertised, but the packing offers insufficient protection for such delicate pieces. One word to the wise: open outside.
Update: Nine years old and still wonderful! --- I was given these as a gift way back in 2009 and I've had them ever since. They're beautiful, with lots of little details that I sometimes like to take the time to look at. They painting hasn't peeled or showed signs of aging in six years. They're heavy and extremely well-balanced - I've had one hanging halfway off the edge of my bookcase for about a year now (too many books!) and it's never fallen. I read some of the poor reviews and honestly don't understand how anyone can call the make of these bookends "sloppy." They're unique and well-made, especially for the price. I've enjoyed them.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my oldest daughter since she had it on her wishlist. I opened the box to make sure it wasn't damaged during shipping before giving it to her. It's very pretty, if you like dragon items, and the weight is good for holding books, which is what I assume many of you are planning to use it for. It's made in China, as most of these things are nowadays, in case that bothers any of you. So, you may want to make sure no one puts it in their mouth and wash your hands after handling it since China has had problems through the years with quality control. Not that anyone over the age of 3 would mouth this thing, but, just in case, I warned you!
The dragons themselves are exactly what I wanted and expected. Their packing, however, caused a problem. The combination of the dragons' composition materials and the styrofoam packaging which kept them from harm on their journey from China made them appear to have come through a blizzard. Bits of styrofoam stuck to their spines, their horns and their teeth and shed all over the house.
Now that I have managed to clean them up and remove all the little white beads from the carpeting and the furniture, they sit proudly and decoratively at the ends of a bookshelf.
I've been using stacks of books as book ends and decided it not only didn't look very good but it was hard on the books.
I ordered these despite the claims that they were too light. After all, the books stand by them selves really and the book ends are just made to finish off each row. If you are having to place concrete bricks to hold your books up you are doing it wrong.
These are heavy enough I have found. They also look great and arrived in perfect condition.
Everyone who sees them comments on their looks. So much so that my books are starting to get an ego !!! Just kidding; but I do recommend these book ends
I ordered these for my boyfriend, who loves dragons. They're very nice bookends, good weight and size. They only get four stars though cause I thought the original colour was hideous. This wasn't a huge problem for me since I had planned on painting them. They take standard acrylic craft paint very well, though they require a few coats to cover up the original colouring. I painted the dragons silver, since that's my boyfriend's favorite coloured dragon, and the base emerald and sapphire. They look fantastic, and my boyfriend just loves them =)
