I bought my first pair of these pants (in tan) from Royal Robbins 12 years ago for our 10 yr anniversary trip. They were absolutely perfect and became my go-to shorts/pants during the spring, summer, and fall every year since. I simply cannot tell you how many miles I wore them shopping, hiking, fishing, camping, and yes even tree climbing! Ha! I've been amazed at how strong and durable they are. Plus, incredibly stain resistant. After 12 years, I could still go out shopping in public and not feel like I was wearing something "dirty." So, imagine my heart break when I discovered that those beloved pair of pants ended up in the wrong sack of clothes last winter and were donated to the second-hand store. (I'm sure some lucky woman is really enjoying those pants!)
So, I was very happy to see that Royal Robbins still makes these pants and I ordered a pair in black this time - just to change things up a bit. I am 5'-2" and 145 lbs. I got the size 8 Short (just like last time). It fits as expected. There are some differences between these pants and my old pair. The new pair sit slightly lower in the waist, which is a bonus for someone as short as I. I love the addition of the zipper pocket in on the right thigh. They've added an extra button at the top of the zipper (it sits inside, and would help keep any pressure off the top of the zipper - not that I ever had a problem with that, but the added security is comforting). The hidden pocket on the lower left leg is bigger than on the old pants. That is nice, since the other one was basically for a key, or folded up bill only. This one I can actually use. Also, the velcro on that pocket is soft and non-chaffing. I mention that because on the old pants, that velcro would sometimes rubb against my leg and be a silight irritation. Not so on the new pants.
I mentioned that I am only 5'-2", and so I absolutely love the loop and button leg adjustment option at the hem. I wish every outdoors/active pants had something like that. I'm so glad that I can adjust it in a notch and not worry about walking on the pant hem especially when wearing sandals. That being said, I must admit that these pants come sized quite well for length already. In other brands, even ordering a "short/petite" means I have 4 - 6" of extra pant leg length! Royal Robbins does a great job of actually making their "short" sized pants shorter than the "regular" ones. What a novel idea!!
I was not paid for this review. I did not receive any discounts. I am simply a long-standing fan of these pants! And the new ones are even better! Actually, I will be ordering the same pants in the tan color as soon as I am done typing this. I'll have a pair of these convertible pants to wear with everything!
I'm 5'0" tall and have a 26.5 inch waist, which falls right between a size 4 short and a size 6 short. I decided to order the size 4 short, and I'm glad I did. The pants are generously sized. The waistband is perfectly fit. It doesn't gap open at the back, but the elastic in the waistband barely stretches unless I bend over. The pants are high-waisted so they DON'T bind in the crotch. The waistband is very wide so it doesn't bind like a skinny belt, and the tummy section is a little baloony. It's roomy enough that I considered buying a size 2, but decided not to. Some people may not like the extra room, but for me this is NOT a bad thing! Unlike a model in a catalog, I actually like to walk and move and bend over and pick things up and I don't care if I look "unfashionable" doing it. In fact these are the ONLY pants I've been able to wear in years (jeans are a disaster). The pant length seems long, but it's not. It's only a little long on me because I'm so short.
The material is very durable and dries very quickly. They are very cool, with mesh inner pockets. They zip on and off very easily, and they don't look too casual. There are plenty of pockets, one with a zipper. One drawback is that there is no hook for a key ring, but I can just sew one in later. I ordered the black pants and after a few washings they haven't faded at all. If you're looking for low-rise and high fashion, I recommend you hie thee to the mall. If you like to think about stuff OTHER than which of your internal organs your pants are digging into at that particular moment, these are GREAT pants and well worth the price. I'm thinking of ordering another pair.
These are great pants to wear on the plane or while traveling. I like the versatility of the removable pant legs and it's water repellant. It dried fast, overnight, when I hand washed it. My complaint would be the zipper that attaches the pants and the pant legs feels annoying, but it's a small matter. I would buy another one.
I bought these because reviews of the Columbia zip-leg pants said that the zipper on the legs was too low and caused pulling and discomfort. Not so with the Royal Robbins. The shorts are super-comfortable. In addition, there is an elastic loop and two buttons to close the bottoms around your ankles. This makes it easier to tuck your pants into your socks. And there's a Velcro flap that lets you remove the leg bottoms without taking off your shoes. Columbia may have these, too -- I didn't check. The Royal Robbins are a little heavier than the Columbias, but not by much. Still very comfortable in the tropics of Brazil.
I really like these pants for camping and summertime use as shorts. The pockets are awesome. The quality is great. I probably own at least 8 pairs of these pants and various sizes and colors due to my fluctuating weight over the last few years. These pants are incredibly durable. I can't say enough good about them.
I searched around for a good pair of hiking pants, as I'm going on my honeymoon to Costa Rica next month. I saw another reviewer saying she bought the pants for a trip over there, so I figured it was a sign. These pants are super comfortable, and fit well. I got a size 8 and I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs, but I like loose pants. So while the waist is a bit big, I'm very happy with how they fit my body. I think a size smaller would have been tight in the legs and I would've had less mobility, but with the larger size that's not going to be a problem. Also, the shorts actually look good, which surprised me. I thought it would be a "well who cares what I look like- I'm hiking" but I will definitely be including them in my regular wardrobe. Highly recommend these pants!
Tried multiple styles and sizes from popular competitors, but these were the best fit and quality. The leg bottoms can either open up to accommodate boots, or be buttoned down to taper if wearing sandals, which is nice for keeping bugs out. Very worthwhile purchase!
These are roomy and not particularly fashionable, but are perfect for backpacking and hiking - as they will accommodate long underwear on cold mornings and have enough give for bouldering. Very comfortable. I imagine they'd be good for travel in cramped airplane seats, too.
Well made & very functional convertible pants. I am 5'3" & weigh 140 lbs . I ordered size 10 reg.,but they were too big & long. Reordered size 8 short & they fit perfectly. Love the Velcro opening at bottom of pants to help getting over shoes!
Great pants! Glad they put a gusset in so I can take the leggings off without have to take my boots off. I put zips in my other pair. Light weight, perfect color. Wish they had them in a 4 at the price. I will need to take the 6 in.
