A bit of a disappointment with the rechargeable batteries. The functionality of the head torch is very good and the reason why I bought it for cycling. The main light is a bit underpowered with the rechargeables for the see part of 'see and be seen' and is only good for the short range of up to a few metres (the specified range of 68 metres is pushing it). The flasher is good though because I use it when in town traffic so that I can be seen by traffic emerging from junctions over the roofs of parked cars. The supplied rechargeable batteries are poor and do not keep a decent charge for very long with the charge level indicator soon going into the orange/red. Though to be fair the specs do say that performance is lower with the rechargeables. I haven't used the red light yet but it looks satisfactory and can be used as an alternative red light source should my normal rear light fail. It is a comfortable fit round the head and keeps in place whilst cycling. The dimming system works well and will be great for reading with the smaller light. The power tap is a nice feature but not sure how much I will use it on the bike wearing gloves. I'd still recommend it though but with reservations about the rechargeable battery performance.
I received the product when expected. I am very please with this headlamp. We spend a lot of time outdoors and often times, we end up out late and in the dark. We charge on a regular charger at home, and the USB port in our vehicle. For the size of the headlamp and the price, it provides great light. We have used it while hunting, trapping, and hiking. Have gutted several deer with just this little headlamp for light. When we think we will be out in the dark, we leave the house with a full charge, so we haven't run into any problems with battery life. I would suggest a quick skim of the directions. My man wasn't very impressed with how bright it was until he figures out that he didn't have the right setting turned on. We also liked the option to order it in Orange. Really helps keep things from getting lost!
This is my second ReVolt; purchased to use while camping. While driving we like the convenience of recharging them via the USB in our vehicle. This model is a bit better than mine; two white light settings and when turned off and back on it automatically goes to the last setting. This model also has a red light feature, where mine doesn't. Not something my wife uses, but I do when I have to rummage around outside and not complete destroy my night vision.
Very good headlamp. This is my 3rd, and I'm glad to see they addressed a couple of annoyances from their older headlamps.
Opening the unit for battery access - Before, opening their headlamps from the top (even other models) was a pain as you can see by some of the older reviews. Plus the two pieces were held by a piece of very thin plastic...I never broke mine, but was worried it would eventually. With this new model they improved both. You open it sideways with a nice tab that you can pull and a hinge on the other side. Easier to open and stronger connection point.
Battery space - I see some of the older reviews complain they couldn't fit non-BD rechargeable batteries in it. I can't speak to that, but I can see with this new version, I was able to fit in rechargeables fine, both Eneloop AAA's and Amazon Basics high capacity AAA's. My one complaint here is that one of the batteries fits in deeper and is a bit more difficult to remove.
USB Charging - It's nice to have an external port option, but I do have 2 concerns over the door. I'm guessing the door itself will become loose and won't stay in place and that the thin piece of plastic holding it to the body may break over time as you open & close it. Time will tell.
As with previous models, the external port ONLY works with Black Diamond AAA's. When I attempted to charge my Eneloops or Amazon Basics in the unit, the charging light flashed red a few times and stopped (it flashes green when charging the BD's). It would be nice if it could charge other brands, but not a deal killer.
LED's - It's got a nice range of bright-to-low, decent throw for the power (I do have a 1000 lumen headlamp for other applications, but it's much heavier). The red LED is nice to have, and I like that you can press & hold the button and both white & red LED's will slowly cycle brighter/dimmer. The menu system is a bit confusing at first, especially if you've never used a BD lamp before, and maybe even for users of other models, since this has a side tap touch button which changes things up a bit. Plus most people use their headlamp infrequently, so they may forget; but I think overall it's easy to fumble through it with some experimentation.
Overall, a very good headlamp that addressed some issues with the previous generation.
