I have always loved this book and wanted to re-read it before the upcoming movie - it is a classic! Themes of desperation, loss of innocence, and how quickly things can change run throughout this novel, capturing the reader and playing on your mind long after you put the book down.

TOP 500 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 stars Slow paced, but still a fantastic read!
Reviewed in Australia on 11 November 2020
A slow burn horror, that takes its time to build up the tension and creepy atmosphere. It did feel a little long. But Stephen King is known for giving a backstory to everything and even adding little asides that will add to the tone of his stories.

Parts where the cast were hysterical were either bang on and frightful, or felt like it was a little overacted (for dramatic purposes) but Pet Semetary did its job in making the hair raise on the back of my neck and pull my legs off the floor and curl them underneath me on the couch to avoid any nasties trying to reach out from the shadows under the sofa.

I caught the mention of Jerusalem’s Lot, another of Kings’ novels (‘Salems Lot’.)
Felt like it took a long time to build up and then ended so quickly. Though I liked the open end to the conclusion.

The book took the time to build up a history around the burial place and how it had soured thanks to the Wendigo, though I would have liked a little more of some hint to how it came to be there, or if Little Gods Swamp was half in, half out of our reality. Like where veil is thin to some other place…

Protagonist Louis seemed to go with the flow, batted around by circumstances (paranormal or not) I would have liked to see him have a stronger back bone. Especially being a doctor. There were instances of inner turmoil and struggles which were played out brilliantly, but I wanted a dash more rationality thrown in there. This made ‘Pet Semetary’ feel like a plot driven novel rather than a character driven one.

Jud was just adorable in this novel. I remember as a child in the ‘80’s watching the film and not particularly liking him, but this novel version is someone I’d want as my neighbour. I wished that his final scenes were a little more macabre to juxtapose against the goodness in him, and give his character a worthy exit.

I loved Ellie’s dreams and sense of premonition and how she seemed to grow stronger as the story progressed. I found myself yearning for more of her story, more development on her premonition.
Wife and mother, Rachel tended to annoy me the most. She seemed incapable of a lot and mostly served as Louis’ sexy wife to have erotic times with in bed, or act hysterically. She just seemed so stereotypically docile that it annoyed me.

It almost felt like there was meant to be a sequel. The new foreword for my edition told of how King was never going to publish ‘Pet Semetary,’ and that it was one of the most personally horrific and difficult stories to write – and because of that, I don’t think he would revisit this world for a sequel. Pity, I’d definitely read a sequel dealing with Ellie, her burgeoning powers… maybe facing off with the Wendigo?

King’s writing style is mostly gripping and as a consequence, what was a slow paced book became bearable.

There was a hint of male chauvinism that is a tone in just about everything published in popular fiction in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, but still a great horror that I restricted myself to reading in daylight hours so I could get to sleep easily once the sun disappeared from the sky.

Recommend this for adult readers, fans of horror and of King. A very satisfactory read.

Pat McDonald
5.0 out of 5 stars A recommended read/audio book
Reviewed in Australia on 10 April 2018
Dr Louis Creed and his family move from Chicago to a new house where he feels his family will be safer; they inherit a pet cemetery and an old Indian burial ground. When his daughter’s pet cat Church dies Louis learns that the burial ground can bring the animal back to life, but soon learns what comes back is never the same as before. Once done the burial ground has an eerie hold over him and the real horror begins. Here is Stephen King the master of horror; I read this book first some years ago and now revisit. All King’s books are better than any movie interpretation and it is true of this one. A recommended read. Pat McDonald British Crime author.
