The cats are cute but aren't heavy enough to stand up to a few tall children's books without help. I cut out a piece from double sided wall mounting tape to fit along the bottom edge of one cat to prevent it from sliding. We lean the books on this fellow and adjust the other cat freely as books are added or taken. Cute touch to the girls room, they love them.
They are cute a meet the 3lb average for book holders. If you are trying to hold up a few small paperbacks u will probably be fine.
As I was trying to use them to hold up the 7 cookbooks (a few medium hardbacks) on my kitchen counter it was an absolute fail. The metal kittys just slide on the granite surface and the books repeatably came tumbling down. For $33 I did expect something of more substance.
It would be 3& 1/2 stars if they let us do halves. before buying bookends, I really went back & forth, worried that 5" high wouldn't be enough to hold up some of the big tall books I have. I was right. They tipped over behind the weight of the books. So I did have to buy another 1 of my original final 3 I has gone back & forth between. For the heavier taller books, I had to get the kind with a plate that runs under the 1st few books. I do like the weight of the kitty bookends & they do make a great decoration for the ends, so I'm not upset, but I would suggest these as bookends only if they are small books, like paperbacks.
PROS: 1. Small. 2. Cute. 3. Cast iron. I have small amounts of cast iron sprinkled throughout the home -and purchased these to add a whimsical touch of cast iron to my home office. They are adorable "holding up" a couple of potted plants. I am happy enough with them for myself... but I would not give them as a gift. (I am picky when gifting!)
CONS: 1. I was expecting these to be solid cast iron. They are not. They are molded in two halves and then joined together - leaving them hollow with a hole at the bottom and lower part of the tummy. (This can be seen if they are facing forward instead of facing the books.) Not sure they would hold up heavy books.
2. The details are not as clear as shown in the photos. They are more hinted at and rustic.
I bought these at a discount in the Amazon warehouse - so I probably won't return them.
I purchased this as a gift for a good friend. I was unhappy with the quality. They are cast iron but my skillets have a nicer appearance. One had a glop of iron in the front on the chest and the other had a wide line down the middle of the face. I struggled with giving them to her but decided to let her make the call. She liked them very much and said the flaws didn't bother her. But they sure did me.
