I'm Finished?! Aww, This Book Felt Like More!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2020
I've actually done it. I've finished all the published Skulduggery Pleasant books. And it's bittersweet. At least I know from that freaking cliffhanger of an ending that if Landy lives through this pandemic he will continue with the series. But I've never had to wait for them before! Oh, my, god, I am so rooting for no. 14, come on Valkyrie, Skulduggery, come on!!!
Wow. It seems like every villain that ever was in Skulduggery's world has shown their faces. Mevolent. Serpine. Vengous. Nye. The Unnamed (King of The Darklands). Zombies. Serafina Dey. Damocles Creed. Even Darquesse is back! And some old good guys too. Meritorious. Saracen. Dexter. Tanith. What the hell, its like all the previous fab Skul Pleasant books smashed into one! Speaking of which, this is one of the books which you will need to read at least from book 7 to understand. Somehow it seems as though all the rest of the books had been simply base layers, character introducers, and every single one of them was building up to this...
Valkyrie and Skulduggery have been sent on a mission to 'Dimension X', aka 'The Leibniz Universe', to assassinate that worlds Mevolent before he marches on Roarhaven. Accompanied by some you might have missed, and one very unexpected companion, they leave everything behind and journey to a dying world to wreak their trademark havoc. But dont worry, Omen Darkly, his twin, Auger, Never and Axelia remain in Roarhaven to crack you up. Omen is on a mission also, to retrieve the Obsidian Blade and give it to Auger so he can complete the Darkly Prophecy. But it's not easy, and Omen has the help of a secret man named Crepuscular Vies.
Sebastion Tao, aka 'Plague Doctor', Darquesse worshipper, has brought her back. And she is busy living in his house and deciding if the world is worth saving. She decides to allow herself to experience something big. And Sebastian has to help.
With all these different characters sharingtheir different stories, and Valkyrie and Skulduggery split up as well, we have very varying chapters,a clever ploy to stop you ever getting bored. And every one ends in suspense, making you turn the pages to get through to the next one of that particular character. I was gripped, did NOT want it to end, but sadly………
Honestly, wow. Derek has finally joined up any loose ends Mr. Pleasant ever had, tying into the most epic adventure yet, with little refs to previous books that bring back good memories, and really, really captivate.
What I noticed (happily) was that Valkyrie Cain, overcome with guilt and shame and self loathing from book 10, forgives herself. She becomes her old funny, clever and heroic self when somebody gives the order for her to end her own life. She realises that everybody else has forgiven her, and all that's left is to forgive herself. If it wasnt weird to cheer at certain parts of a book, I would have there. Her fans will breth a sigh of relief as she lets it go.
Only downside: there is no book 14. Yet. But still, I am inwardly shrieking "NOOOOOOOO!" as if there's one thing I REALLY dont like, it's waiting.
Only the best in the best series, by the best author with the B.E.S.T plots and characters, Seasons of War will not disappoint! One of my fave quotes (sis being huge Potterhead and myself just an average Potter Fan):
"We must kill her and sacrifice her soul to You-Know-Who!"
Valkyrie frowned. "Voldemort?" she asked.
Hahahahaahahahahahaah! (Speaker is, BTW, refering to the devil/Satan) Aaaanyway, absolutely fab read, must have for kids, teens and even adults.
