Tim Barlow
5.0 out of 5 starsBreathes new life into TVs with fewer features
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2020
So a couple of years ago I bought one of the last Hisense TVs before they went Android. It had Netflix and a handful of other streaming services on it and I thought it was everything I would need. But, as we all know, over the last few years the streaming environment has been changing radically. We now have Disney+, Kayo, Prime Video (of course) and even some of the free-to-air apps that are not available on the Hisense platform.

I don't use all of these, but I wanted to use some. At first I tried using a Chromecast but it was a pain having my mobile with me and loading it with a whole bunch of apps that I didn't want on my phone just to play videos via the Chromecast device. What I wanted was something that could play ALL the apps I could ever want, via a remote (in other words, contain the apps on the device), and that had the ability to support new apps when needed. The Fire TV stick is that device.

I do note that the newer Chromecasts have their own remote as well so it's possible that they are now doing the same thing so my comments about it relate to the older generation of them. They got hot, if you left them plugged in to the power supply they gave you, they were not always robust when you went to use them, and if you did what I used to do (plug the device into a USB port in the side of the TV for power, meaning it was only on when the TV was) they whined at you about the power supply. Constantly. And also prevented you from playing HD video.

The Fire TV Stick on the other hand complained at me twice, then stopped. It plays full HD even though it's plugged into the TV rather than the provided power supply. It's easy to use, and even integrates the content from different apps to some degree, even though I really only use it for Prime Video at the moment as it was the main thing I wanted that was not available on my TV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this device. It works; well. Easy to set up, easy to use, and on TVs that are not already loaded with some apps, would handle all your streaming needs quite well. The unit seems to read the remote quite well even though the unit is stuck behind the TV and can't be seen from the front. The voice activation system was hit and miss when I tried it, but I'm not a voice command type of person so I didn't persist with it and it may well work quite effectively for the average person if you're into that sort of thing.

There are some minor things - some of the movies it finds it wants to charge you for; I'm not sure how that works and it might be an Amazon thing, perhaps I'm just too used to Netflix. In any event, for the most part I've been able to watch all I want to watch via this device and I'm happy with it.

As a way of breathing new life into older TVs or getting a 'cheaper' (read as less features) TV to work in the modern world, this is not a bad idea. The math is simple. A TV that has all the apps you want will cost you up to thousands more depending on size and brand, whereas this (for less than $100) gives you the features you want without the cost of integrating it into a TV at high cost.

Bottom line? This is essentially the equivalent of the old 'set top boxes' we all had to get when TV first went digital in Australia. If you want to stream content and your TV isn't up to it, this gets you the features you want without ditching an otherwise perfectly good TV.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoesn’t cast all steaming apps
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2020
You can’t cast apps that Amazon fire stick doesn’t recognise. I’ve been using Google chrome cast and we thought to switch to Amazon as we have Alexa set up in our home but just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it. We will be regifting this fire Stick as it’s useless to us. Stick with google chrome cast its a lot better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product but Sound Issues
Reviewed in Australia on 17 October 2020
Verified Purchase
Everything worked out of the box. I also used a wired network adaptor and everything was easy, except sound. I would actually like to only give 3.5 as sound is a big deal in movies.
All I could get through the ARC channel, when the FS Lite was plugged into a TV HDMI slot, was PCM and while OK was not as good as the 5.1 surround native to the movie streamed. Perhaps on current TVs with the eARC rather than just ARC it works better.
I then plugged the FS Lite into my Onkyo system directly and was greeted with Dolby surround sound.
Unfortunately, every time the FS Lite "sleeps" (which is recommended to save power) it reverts to PCM on awakening and has to be restarted to return again to the Dolby surround.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the money. I think you can expand the storage with an OTG cable

Pleased with the device, amazed at Amazon selling it preconfigured for you, very cool. As always we don't get the better American models here, no volume control which sucks or 4k. You can buy the better one for $70 delivered on ebay. But as it is not released here not going to waste my time getting one, bit over stuffing around with beating geoblocking with smart dns etc.

I put it on an older smart tv, and it really breaths some life in to it. Was pretty surprised to fill up the storage so fast, in half an hour. Was pleased to find a solution. A $6 otg cable and a usb stick should work to fix that. So putting 128gb on it today.

Hooked it up to a playstation 4 controller. Maybe a bit of overkill but was really impressed how easy it is to do.

Pretty pleased with it. Was previously a Roku household. Still think they are very good but we are in Australia not America, keeping things simple.

Easy to expand the storage will take up to 2 terrabytes if you see the need.

Have noticed the Fire Tv light crashes a lot, turns on and off. Never had these issues on my Roku devices.

Found out what the issue was. The flexible Hdmi adapter extender plug seemed to be causing problems so I plugged the stick direct in to the tv. Works fine haven't been able to crash it with heap of background apps running

That is the only issue with the device. There is no way to close the background apps easily. You have to root around in the menus and do them one by one. Total pain in the arse

Really recommend getting that OTG cable, makes it a pretty decent device with all that storage. If you purchase movies, which I don't. You will need storage space

Just a bit of an update. Fire Tv was a bit far away from the router to get 5G . I connected it to ethernet and still has the 128g storage. Actually just connected a usb hub to the otg cable and ran the storage and ethernet adapter of that. There is a good hub for sale on Amazon with ethernet built in for this purpose. Getting very stable good speeds now..

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have high spec 4K then this Stick is OK

I am pleased with what I get from this.

When these were first released in Australia there was a lots of confusion over performance and use for AppleTV+ this put pause on my acquisition.

BUT now with Apple TV+ bedded down, the functional deprecation of ATV3, offers of a discounted price, and being forced to grudgingly surrendering my ATV4K (to a house member who lost her streaming box on changing ISP I was forced to consider something.

Sick of casting from another device CC-Ultra (still needed for new ISP free Binge), what drew me for the price (Mi-Box and Google TV $99) was a cheap "remoted box" with loadable app functionality. ALSO with a crowded house native blue tooth listening and so I bought one. So bluetooth listening is back although not as effective as the Apple TV, for the time being, I am very satisfied (though the memory may fill up) and - inexplicably - Binge missing.

The remote is good, the voice assistant OK and the absence of a volume and power control mitigated via CEC via an AVR, other smart home and Voice assistant devices.

I don't understand why silicon remote covers have to be imported and why Amazon does post "works well with" rating peripherals so it's always a case of fine print, power ratings and risk taking by Ethernet connectors and USB hubs. Surely these would be good Amazon basics (yes I know there's an ethernet adaptor)

4.0 out of 5 stars Does not last

Within hours of posting this review Amazon contacted me - did some troubleshooting - and shipped out a new device. Which worked - no problems now. Odds are I wouldn’t get that type of service if I had an issue with a competitors device.
——-
This worked great for the first 4-5 months - then one day my remote stopped working. I figured it was the batteries - no luck with changing those out. Followed the instructions and online suggestions to get it working again - no luck. The iOS app also worked intermittently - I now need to buy another device and won't be repurchasing this.

4.0 out of 5 stars All in one, nice and easy

It made our life much more easier as we needed a 1 box do all solution for each of our 2 TVs (1 x smart tv and 1 x not so smart tv :) ) and it serves us ok with prime, netflix, disney+, youtube, optus sport, sbs on demand and spotify as well. I also purchased the ethernet connector for each stick for better connectivity.

Works a charm connected directly to a HDMI port on the TVs. Gets a bit tricky when connected to a HDMI port at the back of a Marantz SR8000 ( It needed to be powered up when connected into the TV directly, once it is powered up and operational, it then is disconnected from the TV and plugged into the HDMI port at the back of the amp, only then images come up. It might just be a quirky firmware with the AMP, i need to have a play around with the setup but this is not a showstopper).

Otherwise, very satisfied and strongly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars AU Version of the American Model

It is a bit disappointing when we in Australia do not get to receive the same benefits as others do in other countries (UK, USA etc). There are several features which have been removed from this unit, but one has to admit that it still works quite well. Still to completely test the voice side of things but it should be interesting.
Overall the product is well made and does function abit with less features

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm impressed with the support I received... But I want kids profiles for it to get a 5 star!

I had a very unusual problem, and I was about to give it a low rating. Then I found there was a way to get support. I asked for a phone call, and within 1 minute they called me. I explained the issue, they found that they had configured something wrong on their end, and within about 5 minutes it was all fixed! Thank you Amazon!

(FYI: the unusual problem was that it was trying to bill purchases to amazon.ca even though I am an amazon.com.au purchaser. Because of this, I was not able to purchase anything.)

This is really a great way of streaming videos, but it lacks kids profiles. Because of that I need to put a passcode on just about everything. They really need to fix this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the ultimate streaming device

We moved from chromecast as their assistant is rubbish to appletv, then appletv was rubbish so we moved to FireTV.

The Home buttton needs to be either moved or changed to 'long-press' to go to FireTV home and short press to got to the current 'app' home... the amount of times I've ended up on firetv home and then had to go back into the application #omg

Would also be great if it didn't force feed you streaming services that you dont use on the main page. WHY AM I GETTING DISNEY PLUS MOVIES AND SHOWS when I have DELETED the disney plus app!!!!! Someone's getting plenty of money or sex at Amazon for pushing Disney+ that's for sure. #sigh

Would be great if Plex had slightly better integration also, the voice search doesn't seem to work and uses amazon prime video instead, and the current episodes or movies you are watching are not shown. Not sure if that's a plex thing or once again Amazon pushing us to 'paid' and 'upgraded' content.

I'm looking at upgrading to the 4k version as it would have more 'grunt' for some video codecs when using plex - seems to get pretty hot on some, so 4k version used for 1080p (fullHD) should allow it to work nice and cool, or at least not get hot.

Another downside is that it does not directly pair to echo show speakers (which would be great for a portable projector or kids tv setup), but the speakers will pair with any bluetooth tv then you can use it for 1, 2 (stereo) or 4 (surround) echo speakers.

With Alexa an FireTV and some echo's life is good. Loving how customizable Amazon's products are compared to other brands that are trying to only please 'everyone' and ending up pleasing mostly no-one. The custom intents and skills for Alexa are great.

The on screen interface is a little clumsy and it doesn't run all the apps my Google TV Chromecast runs, but it runs enough for this be be useful on my bedroom TV.

The remote is nice and clicky and very responsive. The device itself has excellent wifi reception and hasn't stuttered or buffered even once.

Very happy with my purchase. I got an ethernet adaptor for it but I haven't needed to use it yet.

Works well with most apps, although sometimes a little slow starting. Once the App starts, it is pretty good with the streaming. The only downside so far is that it does not support Kayo Sports. I have to use another device for that. Hopefully, Amazon will support Kayo Sports very soon.
