4.0 out of 5 starsFar better than products from Google and Apple
Reviewed in Australia on 23 July 2021
My Echo Show 8 2nd Generation stopped working after only one month when the device froze on the last background nature scene. An upgrade from Amazon fixed the problem and my Echo Shoe 8 2nd Generation is now working fine.

Amazon's Alexa assistant and Amazon Music work together beautifully, and are far superior to anything Google provides with its Nest Hubs. I have two 7-inch Google Nest Hubs for their lovely pictures and the clock time but they are hopeless when it comes to convenience when playing music on request.

I bought the Apple Homepod Mini to play classical music from Idagio and it is a complete dud because it only works with Apple's more recent operating systems. My Mac OS "Sierra" system is dated 2017, and will not work with Apple's Homepod Mini. I cannot upgrade my Mac OS because I will lose applications that I need. I might as well throw the Apple product in the trash bin. Still on this point, I should mention that Amazon's Alexa is a far better assistant than Apple's Siri.

I strongly recommend the Amazon Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 5 2nd Generation if music playing on request, popular or classical, is important. These Amazon products are far superior in functionality to anything offered by Google or Apple.

1.0 out of 5 starsLimited functionality in Australie
Reviewed in Australia on 31 October 2021
Obviously made for the US market but has very limited functionality in the Australian market. I bought it for the ability to show recipes while I am cooking but it is virtually useless for that purpose as none of the recipe skills work in the Australian market. In a nutshell - complete waste of time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy if you live on your own or don't like to share

I thought I would replace my Apple HomePod mini in the Dining area with this device as the screen seemed really cool but because Amazon doesn't enable Amazon Households in Australia it is very limited - with the HomePod we could have four adults using their phones but unless you log into the one amazon account you are limited with this device.

3.0 out of 5 stars User interface needs work

I wanted to use this device to act as an aux pass through for a Samsung M7 speaker, only to find this version deleted the 3.5mm port. Ok, I'll use the USB port with a dongle - but no, that port is only for maintenance. Even the brain dead iPhone gives you an alternative! FFS Then I tried to use it to run multiple timers at once for cooking, only to find there is no way to keep the timers on screen. I find that it often misses the verbal "computer" cue unless I exaggerate the pause between computer and whatever command I am giving. Please give us a way to stop it going back to ads and hints and other rubbish. (Yes I know there is a workaround but just allow a simple command to stay on the current screen, be it timers, smart device control or whatever. Also, please for the love of god give us a way to see the list of songs in a Spotify playlist and make choices out of the upcoming songs. Seems to be a great device let down by a crappy interface. On the up side, some of the skills are good, sound seems good and I like the look of the unit. Still deciding whether I should return it or keep it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Connection Issues
Reviewed in Australia on 19 July 2022

I have had an Echo Dot for a couple of years and use Alexa through it, mainly to listen to the radio and recently to control a few smart-home devices.

I added this Echo Show because I thought it would be useful to have a screen device in the kitchen. After setup, I found the feature to add photos from the iPhone to this device. But Alexa on the iPhone says the Echo Show is not connected to Wifi - even though it is. (Has to be, to do setup!)

Quick google, this problem was being reported as far back as 2016. I called Support and got through right away, but deleting the device on the iPhone and re-connecting it didn't solve the issue. Also did a factory reset, with no result. You can see in the image that Alexa says 'no network' on one screen, and 'connected' on another. My router and Wifi setup is not at fault, I have a number of devices connected without problems, so it really does seem like a bug. I'll keep the device, but it's dissappointing. (I've since found that the Amazon Photo App does the job, but it would be better if the included software worked properly.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with YouTube

I pay for YouTube premium and this device does not support YouTube video or YouTube music.
I have 6 Google Nest Hubs and was looking forward to changing to echo because;
it has a camera for video calls & security monitoring
Superb sound quality
Large screen
Cheap price point

If one day it supports YouTube video and music I will definitely switch. For now I am returning this product until they refine the device for media consumption.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good speaker with cheap screen and OS
Reviewed in Australia on 25 July 2022

Fairly good speaker for this price. The screen is non-retina HD and its max brightness is not enough. Anyway the screen quality is more like a $20 one. And the system OS usually stuck when calling or receiving video.

Couldn’t ask a lot for this price, but if you want a speaker with better screen and OS, I guess there's no choice on the market right now in 2022. (maybe consider a cheap iPad or iPad mini?)

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit flakey
Reviewed in Australia on 9 December 2021

Sometimes becomes unresponsive and requires rebooting. Sometimes disconnects from the network and requires rebooting. Constantly suggests football news stories even though I've told it I'm not interested. Annoying Alexa adverts on YouTube constantly trigger it so I was forced to change the wakeup word.

Video calling feature works well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Screen and sound quality pretty average, auto brightness doesn't seem to work properly

Viewing angles aren't great on the display and even at mid volume there's some clipping on the audio, plus the auto brightness seems quite broken. As a home assistant it's fantastic, but the screen / audio / software still needs some work. Good product for the $AU99 price on sale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Software and regional synch issue fixed now works fine
Reviewed in Australia on 14 July 2021
Colour Name: Glacier WhiteStyle Name: Device only
Expected the device to be simple plug n play. Firstly didn't sync with the region inspite of all settings being correct kept saying I was in JAPAN...and getting prompts in Japanese as well as every display was in japanese language !!! ha ha...tried many resets but didn't the phone app couldn't recognise the device. Found Google devices were much easier had no sync issues. Disappointed and returned the device.
However, Amazon called and explained it was a software setting issue, the problem was fixed and is now working fine. Starting to enjoy the features and expect more features to be added, looking forward to more enhancements.
Thank you Amazon for taking customers feedback and addressing the concerns
