Too short, too loose and too thin for neck protection. No value for use outdoors except as 'base layer' for a snug fitting neck gaiter on top, such as the Highlander drawstring neck gaiters. OK for indoor use, e.g., to wear in bed. Otherwise colour, texture, and quality of the fabric is fine.
I took this to Antarctica as a 'just in case' and was surprised to find that it swiftly became one of the things that I used every day. Best worn with crewneck/turtleneck tops, to prevent any gaps around the collarbone, but flexible, warm when wet, proof against salt water, snow and hard breathing -- even pulled up over my mouth and nose it stayed in place, and the side against my skin stayed warm and comfortable. Easy to shove out of the way when not needed. Fantastic against high winds (Force 11 at one point, plus zipping around in zodiacs) and in icy and foggy conditions. Ambient temp was about 0C, but with windchill much lower -- but I really didn't care. Getting back to a v chilly London, discovered it looked surprisingly classy w my winter coat, and am commuting in it daily :) A little itchy in the warm, but perfect in the cold.
My favourite neck gaiter. Wool keeps me warm. Plus, wool means it doesn't smell disgusting especially after I put it over my mouth and nose when I pop into a shop! With other ones I would have to wash them at least once a week, this one can last a whole month or more! I use it every day when I leave the house and when I motorcycle.
I've given 5 stars because I'm entirely happy with my purchase: the gaiter is much lighter and more compact than a scarf, small enough to stuff in a pocket, and is better at providing warmth and wind protection than a scarf. The SmartWool merino is more comfortable than either acrylic or lambswool.
I recommend this as an improvement on both scarves which take up lots of space and don't protect the whole neck, and on Buffs which look shabby.
One caveat: the gaiter fits my 15" neck fine, but I could imagine it would be too tight for much larger neck sizes.
As with the beanie review i did, this is quality and will last. Keeps my neck nice and warm. Working in the cold and rain this winter i dont feel it thanks to this. Smartwool merino never let me down, another great product thank you.
I'm very pleased with this neck gaiter. I have a cheaper gaiter that is a looser fit, but the Smartwool gaiter is far superior. I use it when I'm on my scooter and my neck does not feel any draught. It is very soft and a nice comfortable closeness around the neck. Not at all tight. I have a 15.5 inch collar. I highly recommend this gaiter and I'm tempted to buy another.
The 3 stars are for the quality of the neck gaiter. It is a double layer merino wool that feels nice. I've taken 1 star off because the sizing is small and tight. This gaiter is tight on my neck as a woman who is 5'3". The gaiter does not even stretch and it feel like it's suffocating me. I can't see how it can fit a man with a larger neck.
Excellent product. Fits brilliantly, but I am female. Fits my partner but he is not that big round the neck. Very soft to touch. Have washed it (I always use Nikwax Basewash for technical and wool items) and it looked like new! I have always worn Buff before and this is better.
