How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's Up With Burnt Umber?

I am really enjoying the projects in this book. However, I've had some difficulty matching some of the colors she uses with the same paints that she uses. Rosalie and I actually had a text conversation about the burnt umber/ultramarine mix that she uses in multiple projects. Sometimes it comes out greenish for her as with the owl painting but for me it continues to be more blue gray/black which is what she says in the beginning of the book will happen with those two colors.
So I bought the paints she uses and still cannot match some of her burnt umber combinations or the burnt umber itself. I did discover through google that the green can be made with burnt umber and cerulean blue so I'm getting a lesson in color mixing.
Also, some of her steps are not as detailed as many reviews say. She sometimes describes different colors for the same paints without adding "add more or less water." Her book has a lot of white space which makes for a beautiful presentation but the tradeoff is a lack of written steps and details in the tutorials.
On a bright note, I am enjoying using the WN&C Sketcher's Pocket Box Rosalee suggested for these projects, they are the paints she uses and using the small box is quite fun and I'm happy to find the joy in using a small number of paints.
