4.0 out of 5 starsGreat read

This is the first King book I’ve read and at first I didn’t think I was going to be gripped by it. However, as the tale of the hit man with a moral code unfolds it’s impossible not to be drawn in. He’s performed the hit by about 30%: what could the rest of the story be about? Well, life is complicated by rescuing a rape victim and by discovering the back story of why the hit was necessary. This involves a nefarious media mogul who’s somewhat reminiscent of Rupert Murdoch (who will not be appreciating the portrayal). In between times, he finds his cover as an aspiring author isn’t. Because in writing about his early life and his time as a marine in Iraq he becomes a real author - of a story that can never be published. The story has two endings: the fake one finished by the girl he saves and the real, sadder one. Good stuff, and there’s only one minor bit of supernaturalness to it. That’s what put me off reading other books by King.

Craig
1.0 out of 5 starsLike a bad Jack Reacher novel
Reviewed in Australia on 18 August 2021
As I am a long-time fan of Stephen King, Billy Summers was a massive disappointment. I persisted to the end hoping it would get better; sadly, it didn't.
It starts out with promise -- a slightly mysterious job for a hired killer who senses something might be amiss but just can't help doing this one last job for a big payday; the classic Stephen King trope of lead character who is also a writer (will this angle lead to some macabre twist (like in The Dark Half) or stunning insight?); the small-town Americana observations.
Once the first act is complete the story takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of a new character to play the female lead for the book's second act, but this felt random and forced - very unlike King. From there Billy Summers devolves to read like a Jack Reacher/Lee Child novel, and not a very good one I'm afraid to say.
The brief throwback reference in the second part of this book to one of King's classic early novels was bizarre and completely out of kilter with the rest of the story. Sorry to disappoint fans, but this is far from Stephen King's best work.

Loved this latest book by Stephen King, he really is an Evergreen writer. It is a great story and in true King style it mixes a number of different genres. What starts off as a sniper story takes some very interesting twists and turns and even involves a few nods to a previous book.
Little of the supernatural themes that run through his work but a brilliant well told story. Is over 400 pages but I couldn’t put it down and ripped through it in just over two days.
King writes so well with so many little details about American life and culture that it is a joy to read. If you have enjoyed any of Stephen King’s previous book you shouldn’t miss this…..a cracker!

Stephen King often writes stories that are full of everyday ordinary observations and this is no exception. His observations of the commonplace and mundane are always on point and his characters resound with such clarity as to be completely believable, such that one cannot help but connect with them. This story resounds with poignancy and, as many of his stories have, left me tearful but quietly fulfilled. I will undoubtedly read it again. I recommend you do too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Kings Jack Reacher

This feels like such a change for King in the best way. Read like a Jack Reacher book but with Kings attention to characters more than the typical action of a Reacher book. And then there’s the King-verse Easter eggs. I also loved while reading it there were so many moments and throwaway lines that I knew would irritate people and so far I’ve seen in these reviews how annoyed people are by the mention and criticism of certain political things and knowing how much it would drive those people crazy made me enjoy the book even more.

I was hooked right from the second I bought the book. It seemed a blend of typical king plus a twist of David Morrell(rip). I've read king since I was nine believe it or not but this book just kept me up until I had to force myself to sleep. This book I recommend to all fans of King and those of us left that loved morrell

Stephen King is the Master of story writing. Billy Summers made me laugh, cry, kept me on the edge of my seat and exposed me to an innocent portrayal of love. Loved it and thank you, Stephen King.

King is at the top of his game in this triple story in one, no macabre going’s on, or horror or supernatural, we’ll there is a nicely edited appearance from the past which I will not spoil.
We use the ‘unputdownable’ phrase a lot but this tale truely was.
Nothing short of a brilliant story that is extremely well told.
Possibly Stephen’s best to date.

Billy Summers is a likeable guy. A deeply principled, but flawed individual with a tragic past. A killer with a compassionate streak, and a keen sense of justice.

This is another thoroughly engaging tale by King, a real page turner, and a book that I will return to in the future

Stephen King has managed to capture my full attention and entertain me again. I have been reading SK's books since I was 13 years old and have enjoyed each and every story. He can take you into his world and keep you there until the end. Loved the reference to The Shining. Can't wait for the next story!

Stephen King at his masterful best. Being a long time fan of his, I was thrilled that his writing is as good as if not better than ever. Cannot recommend this book highly enough.
